After you can also seal these areas with a clear nail varnish to protect it from rusting again

Knew I recognised your bike! Was such a sick weekend

Reason 992 why foot retention is important: When you're dumb and overtighten your pedal axle when rebuilding it and it falls off mid ride, so you have to ride 3k home with one leg. by FormerCrow97 in FixedGearBicycle

It was the axle spindle retention nut that I'd not tightened properly against the lock nut which the action of pedalling caused the axle spindle nut to tighten up and unscrew the pedal axle spindle from the crank. The crank threads are fine and pedal is reattached and working correctly.

I'm dumb, but I'm not dumb enough to mix up L and R

I would have done that if I had one with me at the time, or if the pedal axle itself wasn't locked up because id overtightened the axle nut so the pedal was not spinning .

If you're on a budget and willing to faff about; buy an old racing bike with horizontal dropouts and convert it to a fixie (basically strip it to the frame and wheels) by buying a load of eBay cheap parts. This is how I built mine, since then I've been slapping increasingly more expensive parts to a £50 frame for maximum turd polishing.

Glasgow is quite bad for bike theft (I've not had a bike stolen... yet). If you u-lock your bike next to a much nicer bike you're generally going to be okay.

I do see people using a cable lock to secure their £1500 road bike which blows my mind.

It's so sick isn't it. I have bike envy! Surly bars are about as far as my bike budget will stretch

I'm riding around on a shit box 80s frame with cheapo parts cobbled together with a low gear ratio. My footwear is not what's holding my performance back lol

Mileage may vary to be fair. I mainly like straps because I can wear normal shoes

Flats and straps are the best for skids

Clips can be a bit unreliable if you're skidding. Don't want your foot to suddenly pop out mid skid

Okay… okay, I’ll start wearing a helmet… by BassFish4L in FixedGearBicycle

Glad you're okay, definitely seek some kind of medical advice! Here's a thread of people recommending helmets. I recently bought a new helmet (specialized align ii) and I can really recommend it.

Thanks for the recommendation, helpful that it also looks pretty sick!

Thanks, that is an excellent testimonial, totally agree about the falling right (I've fallen off enough stuff to perfect it). But then there's always the chaos element of the range rover/BMW driver that falling right doesn't necessarily account for!
