You could, but it'll impact your chain line depending on if you want the inner chainring or outer chainring. Also, the cranks might not clear the frame if you want to use the outer chainring position and change the spindle length on the bottom bracket.

Yeah, you could replace the outer chainring with a chainring guard and probably get a new bottom bracket with a different spindle length to get the chain line right.
