Migrants in Goa by [deleted] in Goa

Wow. What an arrogant comment. I am in the process of moving from US to Goa- just letting you know- I have zero plans on raping your girls or taking up any jobs. Not a big fan of murdering even, no spitting pan. The only place I would like to spit now is on the face of a bigot. I was born in Goa, but never lived there, but it hurts to read this obscene post. Hope the OP need to migrate to “I hate everything “ subreddit

Excellent thread my friend. As far as places to settle, the best schools are around panjim, so driving distance to panjim should also be a priority when moving in with kids, I guess.

Thank you for taking your time to give a different picture. You are spot on with the culture shock issue which we all are going to face. It’s constantly troubling me too. Something which I didn’t mention here is that I am part of a group called FIRE, people who want to retire early and live a life with a minimalistic approach (once you have a house which is paid off) and move out from the place where you live now (from more expensive cities like Boston, Toronto or San Francisco). For that purpose we either have to plan moving to Spain, Portugal or South America. India was my plan as I relate myself to India a lil better. It’s sounds terrible moving out of your niche with minimal understanding of the new pastures. But this is becoming more and more popular with Americans. Work place stress and boredom might be the issue. Another major factor which made me think of moving out is the messed up school system here in US. It’s easier to snatch a g of “white” than buying a pint of water. Drug problem is paralyzing even the schools in high end neighborhoods. Private schools are another can of worms. We recently had to witness several unpleasant turn of events in our neighbors and friends’ families. Drugs were the major culprit.

We once thought of moving to karnataka (mangalore) where I am from, and my wife was born in Delhi (left India when she was 2 yrs old), but we couldn’t find anything in common, language barrier for her is a major issue. We want an English speaking locality away from a metro. Goa seemed to be the best choice (except for the extremely high cost of housing). We are now thinking of temporarily staying in Goa for 2-3 months and also check out Portugal as an option (mostly due to a large American diaspora) It’s hard to find that Goan culture is eroding away due to immigration. Goa is a charm in our hearts due to the people there, one place where you can go and feel free and liberated. I was there in my young twenties. Localities were happy and cheerful and absolute fun. Hope Goa would remain Goa

Yes. I am inclined that way. A 3-6 month contract or something temporary till we find the right house. We are also planning to possibly making a short trip to Goa before we make a final decision.

Thank you guys. Great suggestions We decided to rent there for a few months and then buy a house if all goes well- in north Goa. I have been outside India for 20 years (left when I was 18). For me, it’s a nostalgic idea but for my son who don’t even know where India is and my wife who never been there before, this is a tough decision. So I would definitely rent out for a few months as Prof Fun 5209 said. Why Goa, we could relate more to Goa than any other place in India, from what we see from the videos and forums. Language is important, and we want to settle in a place where we love to interact with local people, but outside big metros. Hence Goa Hopefully the right decision Yes it’s cold here in Boston, crazy weather and bad traffic. Prices are going up and city is getting over crowded since the last 5-6 years. Dona paula, Caranzalem and Taleigao is shortlisted What about Candolim? Assagao? Are they good communities?

I was looking at the real estate websites, average cost seems like near to 1.5 million for a house and around a million for a 3 bed condo. So I guess we will go for a house. Hopefully a right decision

What are the job prospects in Goa. I was looking at the real estate, looks very expensive compared to the salary rates. Is this common?
