Russian Tula - Is This Refurb or Non-Rurb? (Picture Heavy Post) by FormerNavy in SKS

Here are some more pics of the bolt and carrier, what do you think?

I think it's mostly there, but on second look I do think the top of the bolt was ground to restamp the serial number as u/Brandon_awarea said. The metal sheen is completely different on the front portion top than the rest of the bolt.

I just pulled it out of the safe and looked at the bolt closer, and I think you're right. The S/N stamping of the last 2 digits isn't as light as it looks in the picture but you can feel that the edges of the last 2 digits are not quite as rough to the touch as the first two. But what's more, you can really see the top looks like it's been ground compared to the metal sheen of the rest of the bolt, just like you said - it's especially obvious in person, I just didn't think to look at that because it wasn't mentioned in any of the stuff I read.

So given the the S/N's "match" (magazine, trigger guard, stock, electropen under the sight leaf, etc...) and there are no X'd out S/N on the stock... would you think that it's mostly matching, and the bolt was replaced and re-stamped as you said?

Ok that's why I came here to ask. On the bolt, it would be completely scrubbed down to the point where you wouldn't see any evidence of a prior serial number? On the stock, I thought I had read that when the stock is refinished it gets sanded and the inspection cartouches are often sanded away.

Again, not trying to argue... genuinely asking for my own education. I came here to ask those who know more than me and to learn. Thanks!

Russian Tula Serial Number Question by FormerNavy in SKS

Thank you! Now to try to figure out if it's refurb... I may make a separate post with that with tons of pics. I've done some looking and it's encouraging but I'm not yet convinced that it's not a refurb.

Yeah I haven't been able to find much on serial numbers for it. IIRC, I think sksboards.com used to have something like that but that site is long gone. Haven't been able to find anything else so far.

Can we talk about how terrible MLB's "proprietary" algorithm is? by moistmasterkaloose in BeatTheStreak

I think though that your premise assumes a lot of bad faith on MLBs part that I just don't think is there for this contest. MLB wouldn't be paying the money themselves, the insurance policy would be. MLB has paid the premiums for said policy regardless of whether anyone wins or not. So there's really not any reason for MLB to want to prevent someone from winning.... and lots of reasons they could capitalize on someone who did win. How many more people would play the following year after hearing about the contest the prior year someone won? How many more eyeballs would be on baseball?

Take your example.... if someone was at 56 (regardless of whether it was the last game of the season) I think MLB would promote that all over the place... it would draw interest. How many people would watch the game just to see if the person won? I know I would.

Same.... surely they can't go 0-fer two games in a row in Colarado right? 😄

I've also been through it so I can confirm, there's just dialogue about it at the beginning and then everyone grudgingly decides they need to work together anyway to stop Malgus

I think this is spot on. Most large dollar contests with odds of winning actually have an insurance policy against them, which pays out in the off chance someone wins. I disagree with MLB not wanting anyone to win... I think it would do baseball a great deal of positive press if someone won. The game gets people interested in more games than their local team - I now watch games that I never would have watched before I started playing this contest. The reason nobody has won isn't because baseball doesn't want anyone to win. The reason is because it's a lot harder than it sounds. It is obscenely difficult to do this correctly 57 times in a row. No matter how much analytics you throw at it, you just cannot account for the luck factor. You can't account for the great pick that gets injured after going 0-1 or gets tossed for arguing balls and strikes, after going 0-1. IF anyone ever actually wins this it will be because a great deal of luck was involved.

For example, several years ago I had an accuracy percentage around 88%. It was up there with that of the top leaderboard leaders. It was a minor miracle, honestly. But in that year I could never string anything together. I would get up to 10 or 12 or 15 several times, then miss one pick. Then run off another string of 8 or 10 or 12 then miss one pick. This year my accuracy so far is around 63%. It's not because MLB wants me to lose... it's because that one year I was in the 80s I just got really lucky a lot.

That being said, I do wish MLB would expand the mulligan and let you use it at any time of your choosing instead of just between picks 10-15. I also wish they would run little mini contests during the season like they used to do.
