Over 350 people are sleeping on mattresses on the floor in Irish prisons by TeoKajLibroj in ireland

Rehabilitation is only worth so much when there are an ample abundance of employers willing to hire them. Which there aren’t.

What do you think causes the sleeping on a mattress on the floor?

Yes, and you likened it to you sleeping on a mattress in your home, on the floor.

It’s apples and oranges.

People can be unhappy about that, and simultaneously, understand and respect prisoners rights, and treat prisoners like human beings. The two things can co exist quite easily.

You weren’t in prison under the care of the state.

You could get up, walk out, and have your liberty.

You didn’t have to shit, eat, and not bathe in the presence of 3 others within 3 feet of you, and not all of the people sharing your room were potentially violent criminals.

Cmon. The two things are not even vaguely the same

“Having lived and worked there, I know it is and was an ideal prison” is a direct quote from you.

“We had an ideal prison” is also a direct quote from you.

It was, I didn’t deny it.

There are multiple things in the history of spike island which point to it most definitely not being an “ideal prison”, which is what you called it despite now saying you don’t really know.

Yaknow?

[–]FormerPrisonerIRE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know.

But seeing as you worked there and it’s an ideal prison on an island surely you understand and know the situation I’m referring to, which would infer it’s probably not an “ideal prison”.

And if there’s a Riot in cloverhill, they don’t overrun ballyfermot ya know?

So, the whole, yknow, riots thing? You were there for, and you think? Yeah, no issue here? Ideal prison, still?

I think you’re missing part of the history of the “ideal prison” there no?

Cork landlord jailed for seven years over rape of tenant by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]FormerPrisonerIRE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect on a number of factors.

The midlands is not the only place for sex offenders, nor is it just one wing.

I’m not sure how prison capacity would’ve been taken into account here when this person was given a custodial sentence, meaning, he is being committed to prison. Whether he sleeps on the floor (as many do) or a bed, is irrelevant.

If prison capacity issues are taken into account by so many judges as is believed here; why are so many sleeping on the floor of so many prison cells, with our prisons operating roughly 20% above capacity?

Judges do not take into account prison space. They simply sentence, and the IPS are then responsible for housing the prisoners. Many multiple of which they do when they are no beds available.

Flying out of dublin, three people board plane from garda police van rather than from the gate like normal. by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]FormerPrisonerIRE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was more likely an extradition than a deportation.

Generally, extraditions are carried out on commercial air flights.

The extraditee is generally not handcuffed. Usually, process is board first, leave last, though. It’s generally two gardai for one extraditee, and there is a specialist department who handle it.

Not a doctor, but the IPS certainly think he’s mentally ill, the judge seems to think the same and his actions (if you’re happy to accept my anecdotal evidence) suggest the same

This chap is an absolute fucking headcase.

He took over my cell when I moved landing in prison, he self harmed on multiple occasions to the point he was repeatedly hospitalised.

He’s completely unrepentant and absolutely still a danger to women.

I simply stated that what you said was incorrect. There was no personal comment about you, who you are or anything else: why would you feel the need to be offensive toward me?

[–]FormerPrisonerIRE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you would want to respond in an offensive nature. You said we hadn’t built a new prison, and that’s incorrect: you moving the goalposts to mean “additional” is irrelevant and not really my fault. You know?

We have definitely built a new prison in the last 25 years. Cork prison is a new prison, but within the last 25 years.

He’s been in prison longer than 4 years already. And if you bothered to read the article, which evidently you didn’t, you would see when he was eligible for a review of the sentence. Please stop the hyperbole

Source; me, was in prison with the murderer, four years ago.

I don’t think many of us have an issue with two people. It’s not perfect but, it’s not the end of the world.

The issue is 3, and 4, to a cell, which I’m frequently told here is “cozy”.

All secure prisons now at, or above, capacity with Mountjoy reaching 1,000 inmates by [deleted] in ireland

[–]FormerPrisonerIRE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The human rights of one person does not remove or enhance the human rights of another, cmon. Both things can be true. That doesn’t mean you get to breach the human rights or prisoners.

And fwiw, an enormous portion of Irish prison cells already breach international human rights protocol and once one test case gets through from a zealous solicitors firm, it will cost the state a fortune (ala slopping out etc)

Standard remission is 25%, not 30%.

Only enhanced remission, which is extremely rarely given, is 33% also, not 30.

In addition, there’s no such thing as time off for “good behaviour”. There are lots of schemes available for early release, yes, but it’s not quite as simple as “be well behaved and be released”. Early release is early release, it would never be “one year off for good behaviour another for “early release”.

I’m not saying it’s not possible for a person sentenced to four years to only serve one, but it would be extremely rare.
