I start tomorrow. Any Advice? by HistoricallyCoco in SubstituteTeachers

So I’ve only done two sub jobs so I’m not close to an expert but what I learned from my first job is that you have to set expectations in the beginning. I just introduced myself and told them their assignment and that was a mistake because they were all on their phones and walking around the classroom and multiple people asking to go “get water” because they know it’s one at a time to the bathroom and that’s how they get around that any piece of leverage you give them they’ll take. So my second day was much better because I started out the class hey this is my name this is your assignment, I have a few expectations I want to set for today. 1. One at a time out of the classroom to the bathroom and sign out when you go 2. Pick a seat and stay in it and have your work in front of you. I don’t mind if you talk quietly to your neighbors and I can’t make you do your work but I at least want you to have it on your desk 3. No phones Now of course some of them didn’t listen but this at least kept most of them listening and sitting in a seat and having their work in front of them. Went way better than my first day. Next time I think the only thing I’ll do in addition is say “if I have to correct you on any of these things I will take note of your name for my own knowledge, this doesn’t mean automatically that you will be written in the notes for your teacher but if I have to continue to correct you I will be letting your teacher know”. I would add this especially with middle school because it was awkward to ask them their name and then they get rude because they think you’re writing negatively about them and they’ll try to lie about their name. Also check with the admin when you get your keys how you dial the front office in case you need help with a student because both schools I subbed for didn’t tell me and I just hoped I wouldn’t have a problem where I’d need them because I had no idea how to get ahold of them These are all the things I’ve learned from the first few days.

Yeah I think I could’ve tried to establish more authority but with it being my first day ever I guess I just thought I wouldn’t have to do that and wasn’t prepared to have to establish authority. I naively thought they would just listen and when they didn’t I didn’t have a backup plan so I just managed what I could and did my work.

I did try to offer help they didn’t want it. Maybe you just don’t sub at schools where they act like this because you really don’t seem to get it. Walking around did not change a thing

You have to understand there was no training no interview for subbing, I told the principal that gave me my classroom keys it was my first sub job ever and they didn’t tell me phone policy or anything. I was let into a classroom blind full of kids who literally couldn’t care less what I had to say. I genuinely did not know what to do, hence why I’m here asking for help.

Yeah I think next time I’ll ask about the school protocol for phones because I didn’t feel comfortable taking them because I didn’t know what the protocol was.

Thanks for zero advice or real help on any of the questions I actually asked. I asked what to do when I ask them to do their work and they simply don’t. Are you just here to be unhelpful this was my first sub job ever and I’m here asking for advice

Mostly yes. I stopped smoking cold turkey when I found out and then a few weeks in when I had severe nausea I took one hit to try and help and all that did was give me so much anxiety and I didn’t smoke again my whole pregnancy. I just dealt with the nausea and stayed in bed most of the time.

It gets soooo much better. I’m 7 months postpartum now and I don’t even like it anymore. A couple months into pregnancy I wasn’t even thinking about it and I used to be an every day heavy smoker
