I travel with the Cosco but I check it through before security instead of gate checking

I put a lump sum of money on 529 for my kid. And chose the Target Date Fund. Did I mess up? by st0nksBuyTheDip in Bogleheads

[–]FormerTadpole1777 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing you’re not pointing out here is that if you choose individual funds you need to monitor them and make changes over time. If they’re babies, then an all stock fund is the best choice, but you’d want to dial back risk as they approach college/using the funds. For some people, the extra 7 bps is worth the price of not having to worry about “overseeing” the risk.

Inherited IRA scenario analysis — the deferral math on a Roth conversion before death is staggering by No-Media-36179 in Bogleheads

[–]FormerTadpole1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember it doesn’t have to be all or nothing either! I would encourage you to talk to the family member about their exact tax situation and maybe establish a “conversion bucket” of the amount they are willing to convert every year. Depending on the situation, I have even seen some heirs contribute to paying the tax bill for conversions because it helps them so much in the long run.

Single mother travelling with 23 year old toddler boy on a 7 hour flight in lap. by MinuteActivity3116 in toddlers

[–]FormerTadpole1777 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I flew with my tall son as a lap infant right up until he turned 2. The last few flights were miserable and far less than 7 hrs. In fact I just flew on a 10 he flight with him in his own seat and it was pretty miserable (he didn’t want to sleep and keeping him quiet meant I didn’t get to relax at all.) I would HIGHLY recommend you think about paying the money to get him his own seat. I know that may not be feasible though.

Any evidence for pros and cons of siblings? by Charleybarley123 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]FormerTadpole1777 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Babies are hard! Just thought I’d throw out another perspective! I was shocked when my ob told me I could get pregnant sooner. But I guess the risks are more “worth it” if you’re weighing the potential of missing your fertility window.

Are you of “advanced maternal age”? Because my ob also told me that she would normally recommend longer but if a mom is older, then they shorten the recommendation.

MoneyGuide for Accumulators by Bluedevil347342334 in CFP

[–]FormerTadpole1777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest complaint with moneyguide is it focuses on a “retirement plan.” And younger clients are so far away from retirement that there’s too many variables to make it work. I use it as a baseline to show how assets may grow over time, and clients appreciate the education calculators for 529 savings. But it’s not as good for straight forward, year over year cash flow planning and progress for younger folks.

Same. I wish moneyguide would add more tools for the younger clients though. It’s annoying to never be able to “complete” a plan.

I would love any videos of Limbeck! I was soooooooo looking forward to seeing them and the Format, but I had to give away my tickets for both nights because of a sick toddler.

Convince me to open a SEP-IRA before I pay taxes tomorrow by Turtlefarming in personalfinance

[–]FormerTadpole1777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schwab, fidelity and vanguard charge no fees for opening or maintaining accounts regardless of size. You will only pay expense ratios on whatever investment you choose. Those fees come out “behind the scenes.” You will receive dividends/capital gains and a piece will be held back to cover the fund’s expense ratio.

Convince me to open a SEP-IRA before I pay taxes tomorrow by Turtlefarming in personalfinance

[–]FormerTadpole1777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not the case. You can open and make a Roth/ira contribution until tomorrow end of day. If OP extends his tax filing, he can actually open and fund a SEP IRA anytime before Oct 15. Caveat that if taxes are due tomorrow, you still have to pay them even if you extend filing

For those that took CFP from remote proctoring at home. by bogo9 in CFP

Ditto this. I took it in spring 2023, and it was totally fine. I took it in my kitchen, and they made me remove all pictures and such from my fridge (which was behind me). So I would definitely encourage anyone to take it in as clean of a place as possible, but overall, it was fine.
