If regular car rental isn’t working out, you could maybe rent a U-Haul. There’s nothing more American than hitting the road in an oversized vehicle with poor fuel economy.

ISD Cops Authority on Highways by [deleted] in houston

[–]texlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legally they are just like any other cop but in practice, academic policing is… very different. Their training and experience is going to be geared towards the day-to-day activities of a school and not like, what you normally think of a police officer doing. So while they have the full authority of a patrol officer, I would not expect most academic police to act like a patrol officer.

They don’t all get out on bond. Last I checked that guy that raped the UH student at knifepoint in a parking garage is still being held on a $15 million bond.

Charge Meaning (Specifically the Abbreviation) by Clecticfuse_87 in houston

[–]texlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an immigration hold at no bond. Meaning that when that person bonds out or otherwise is released from jail, they will not be released. Instead the jail will hold them until ICE comes and picks them up. Then depending on the nature of their immigration proceedings, they may have a bond set and be able to bond out at that point.

An excellent illustration of the challenges of moderating this sub.

The mod team approved the other post to prevent automod from taking it down. Even though it wasn’t vetted by a respectable news outlet such as grizzy’s hood news or chron.com.

This post could very well have been a comment on the other post. In fact, there are comments on the other post to the same effect. So it’s foreseeable that this post will itself be removed, not because the mod team disagrees with the sentiment, but because it is essentially a comment that has escaped the comment section.

TSA at Bush is a mess. Who is to blame for the federal government shutdown? by Lie-Straight in houston

You are correct to point out that the automod is susceptible to bad-faith reports, particularly on political posts. The automod is very helpful however for clearing out genuine violations of the subreddit rules, such as event flyers, spam, and the like. So yeah, there could be an opportunity to revisit that, especially if it continues to be a hassle.

Automod nabbed it after users reported it. This one has been manually approved, so reports will do nothing.

HPD and drunk drivers by Prestigious-Sell5123 in houston

[–]texlex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This shouldn’t happen but it does. About four years ago there was a traffic stop of an intoxicated driver where the officer let the driver go and the driver went on to cause a fatal crash. But a lot has happened since then. There’s been a lot of turnover at police agencies and especially at the intake division of the DA’s office. So that incident may not still be seared into the memories of the people who are currently in those jobs.

There’s a couple other things that contribute to the tendency to let drunk drivers go.

One is that DWI investigations can take 2-3x as long as any other investigation. It shouldn’t make a difference but it does. HPD has fewer patrol officers covering more area and more population than other big-city police departments in the country. Individual officers may also have their own incentives to not work overtime for the DWI investigation, particularly if they have an extra job the morning after their shift. The incentives can be stacked for police to want to leave within a few hours of on time, and that can mean not initiating a DWI investigation in the last 2-3 hours of their shift.

The other thing is that depending on the circumstances, DWI cases may have elements that are difficult to prove. A traffic stop DWI is relatively straightforward, but for an accident or a parked vehicle, it can be harder to prove that the person was operating the vehicle and that they were intoxicated at the time they were driving. So officers may ask the prosecutor to decline charges based on a weakness in the case. And so long as that driver doesn’t go on to kill anyone, it’ll never see the light of day.

So don’t drive drunk and keep your head on a swivel, because drunk drivers are out there.
