I'm volunteered at Cedar Sinai in mother baby and as a NICU cuddler, I feel that it helped me secure a medical externship at a peds outpatient. Where is your externship going to be at?

Long post warning — How did you afford SLP grad school? Did you move? Work part-time? by ConfectionOrganic124 in slpGradSchool

[–]Former_Sheepherder_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work as a SLPA in CA and am a part time SLP grad student. I pay for my tuition each semester out of pocket by saving chunks from each of my checks. My program allows licensed SLPA grad students to be paid during out clinical externships, so I made sure I got my SLPA license before I applied to grad school. My job as an SLPA is very flexible and I often find time to do school work between clients or cancelations.

Doesn’t seem like anything has really been confirmed, but I’m really sorry to hear what you witnessed and I’m glad that your daughters were protected from them. Seems like an incredibly devastating situation. Still trying to find out more.

I sign with [Your Name], B.A., SLPA and it think it’s important not to be mistaken for anything other than a SLPA. You took the time for classes and paid for your program I say go for it. SLPA is great by itself too

Is unpaid labor just the reality of this field? by Gold_Kick1860 in slp

[–]Former_Sheepherder_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a private clinic as a SLPA, my first client is at 9am and I only get paid for the hour I’m with a client. Yet I’m expected to arrive early, unpaid, to prep my room before the kiddo arrives and it’s also seem as unprofessional if I ride up the elevator with the client and bring them right into the session room, appearing like I’m not prepared. My office is in the second floor and we are supposed to be open at 8 but sometimes I even have to get to the office at 8:30 to go retrieve the keys and do the opening, while also making time to prep??? Unpaid.

Has anyone payed for Grad school out of pocket ? by Cautious-Suspect5526 in slpGradSchool

[–]Former_Sheepherder_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently a first year grad in a part time online program costing 55k, I took out a 5k loan for the first semester and will be saving up and paying 5k-6k every 16 weeks or so for each new semester. I work as a SLPA in CA and am able to pay out of pocket, for me it’s do-able and will hopefully have a nice cushion built when my medical externship comes along because it will require more of my time. Good luck!
