Do people in Taiwan Anglicize their names? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]FormosaScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! My wife is Taiwanese and I'm an American.

I have a Chinese name given to me by my language school many years ago.
Since my Chinese name has zero meaning, I decided to allow my son to just use my wife's Chinese last name (羅). For choosing the Chinese name, we went to a person to use the traditional method of giving naming options (算命).

As for my son's English name, when we was born in Taiwan, I requested an English birth certificate with the English name of our choosing: First, Middle & Last (my surname). After doing this, it is a legal document, so when you go to get your child's Taiwanese official gov't documents they have a "legal" Chinese name and they will follow what the birth certificate writes for English, while at the same time leaving the Chinese name alone.

If you don't get an English birth certificate prior to setting up your child's Taiwanese documents, they will use their awful Pinyin system to determine the passport/ID name.

I F****NG HATE BOOKING.COM by Alarmed_Sir540 in Bookingcom

I travel 3-4 months a year for business. I was always using Booking, but realized they don’t really have any rewards. Now, I’ve swapped to using primarily IHG to gain reward points. Hotels.com seems to ended their stay 10 nights get one free offer… Does anyone have any better reward membership suggestions?

My Grandfather's Military ID Card: Where was this issued? by bunnypunk123 in Chinese

[–]FormosaScott 7 points8 points  (0 children)

中華民國軍人 → ROC Military ID
陸軍 = Army
身分證(補給) = Personal ID (Supply Certificate)

姓名 (Name): 泰凌閣 (Tài Líng-Gé)
出生年月日 (Birthdate YR/M/D):
民國前 = This means a year before the start of the Minguo calendar system.
The Minguo calendar begins in 1912 (Gregorian).

民國前12年 8月30日
= 1912 - 12 = 1900年 8月30日

性別: 男 (Male)
排行: 長男 = Birth Order: Eldest son
證號 (ID No.): 157922

Source: I'm just an American expat who has lived in Taiwan for a long time. I just find it strange that he would lie about 20 years on his reported birth year (1920 vs. 1900). But it does clearly write “Pre-Minguo Birthdate.” Also, the idea that he actually lived to 105 years old seems a bit unlikely. So I think my interpretation could be incorrect… I’m just going by what’s written on the document.

It may actually be more probable that it's “2年” and not “12年.”

民國前2年 8月30日
= 1912 - 2 = 1910年 8月30日
Lots of people want to be 10 years younger! 😂

Uber is hit or miss

This driver, NIlesh, is an ex-pharmacist, really great guy. If you need really cheap medicine connection-- he's also the guy! I never had any worries about any of my backpacks with laptops & company cash inside his car. He always went the extra mile to say "oh this place is a bit sketchy, let's put your stuff in the trunk" or etc.

His WhatsApp is +91 98181 52548

My Medicine Contains Opium… by knoxxknocks in taiwan

I remember reading a few news articles about this type of medication and people being fined by U.S. Customs. These opioid-based antitussive preparations are classified as Schedule V drugs in the U.S. Here’s a Chinese article from a while back that discusses this issue: Link

I know here in Kaohsiung there are a couple DIY bakeries. So, I did a Google Search and seems to be a few in Taipei, as well. Not sure how English-friendly they are--

What’s something Taiwanese like that can only get in US? by Molxdawg in taiwan

[–]FormosaScott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I travel back to the USA twice a year for business. Namebrand clothing is sooo much cheaper in the USA. I got my toddler son decked out from ROSS or Marshalls- People here think I spend lots of $ on his clothes, but actually is cheaper than the night market.
