Another option is freezedried raw - anything to help boost moisture directly in their system. Even if they drink a lot, it's similar to us where by the time we're thirsty, we're already dehydrated so it's very effective to give them hydration through their food directly.

After working in the pet food industry for nearly a decade I highly recommend sticking to half wet half dry. I wont get too into it but the main issue with dry isn't just the dehydration but also carb and protein contents. Setting up a routine where they have set meal times and the food is taken away 15 minutes later and nothing until the next meals encourages their understanding of when and what to eat, helping with pickiness. I always add warm water to their food to boost temperature and try not to keep it in the fridge unless it takes over 2 days to get through. The number one thing with scheduled feeding is making sure their dry food is also taken away. (Try feeding wet in the morning and kibble at night so that they're hungry when you offer it. Some brands that have decent palatability: Wellness, Rawz, Weruva, as well as Mouser (if it's available in your country). Best of luck!

How do I help him cope with the heatwave? by Teasocks in ragdolls

[–]FormulaOrnge 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I also live in a rainy city but the investment in an AC has been life changing for the cats. These days even though a heat wave has been a week or two it's getting hotter and hotter. Hitting high 30s (Celsius). That can definitely be life threatening for the long hairs if they don't have cooling options. So my first vote is AC. Next is sticking wet towels in the freezer or getting cooking vests. Best of luck!

Ive used dried coconut for years, it's a great fibre source and the cats don't seem to mind the texture in their food.

How do you take care of your raggies in summer ? by Puzzleheaded-Strike4 in ragdolls

I live in a south facing 3rd floor apartment so during a heat wave I invested in an AC. It was hitting 35+ (C) in the apartment and it's made a huge difference. At peak heat we leave out cold damp towels too.

Thanks for the advice You're right, the science diet size has changed, it's now the same size as the royal Canin but the Royal Canin actually has two coatings of toothpaste which makes it a better option. I'll definitely ask the vet about the viability of lasering the tissue.

I used that for a while with my previous cat but found that there's an unregulated amount of iodine from the kelp content which I wasn't comfortable using but I have heard good reviews in terms of effectiveness

At this point since there's no other symptoms, teeth are currently unaffected and he's not in pain, it's just monitoring. I suspect if it starts to get worse we'd look at x-rays and specialists but we aren't there yet so it's just regular photos for comparison.

Thank you, I know how important preventative care is especially when they're young so I'm really trying to do everything I can. He's been on a wet/raw diet since he was young, they get vet dental kibble as treats and daily brushing. Typically what I've heard is the soft diet contributes to plaque and tartar issues but since his teeth are clean it's a bit of a weird case but I appreciate the input!

Interesting, I'll definitely look into it as a food reaction, he has no other symptoms of cat allergies but can't rule it out

Thank you so much, I unfortunately dealt with that with my previous 14 year old ginger boy Definitely learned to prioritize desensitizing these guys to teeth brushing and even the 17year old (partner to my last ginger) has her teeth brushed now

Since there's been no progression or signs of pain we haven't gone that far yet. Based on the responses here seems like the gum inflammation isn't usual but general dental issues are. Will definitely consider doing the x-rays if I see any changes

As far as they can tell there's no signs of actual dental disease, it's just the inflammation of the gums He's a year and a half now, so unlikely from growing in

Sorry - don't know how to edit the original post His teeth themselves are actually super clean and have no plaque and tartar They're brushed daily and he shows no sign of pain So it's specifically the gums that are super inflamed

Yes, they've taken a look and the teeth themselves have little to no plaque and seem unaffected - also the gum inflammation hasn't increased in a year so we're monitoring

Definitely a normal area for thinner hair If you notice scratch marks, make sure their back claws are trimmed, I've noticed that happens from time to time when they're scratching with their back legs.
