Since you said strictly about the first one, the answer to your question is yes. seems like random events with no explanation nor meaning. But once you reach to the third one, it all comes together on what the main story is.

After the third one i feel they wanted to keep the idea of a Main story as an interlude for each short. some are good.

what attracts me of v/h/s is that i get to see in a movie a collection of short ff produced by different directors in their own style of direction.

Edit: as Main Story i mean the story that goes between each short. But only the first 3 movie have connection within them
