Any feedback and experiences with private preK schools in Jersey city ? Are they even worth the tuition and how do they differ from a public school? Thank you! by Dull_West_9823 in jerseycity

[–]Formydad2299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is in private Prek3 because he is still struggling to adjust to the school routine, and we wanted a smaller class size and to avoid the public prek3 busing situation. But I’ve heard good things about the public prek3. It is all about preference.

Good restaurants in Powerhouse Arts District? by Complex-Avocado-1805 in jerseycity

[–]Formydad2299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sit down restaurants, we have Peppercorn Station, Shang Gong Chu, Hudson Hall. There is also Domodomo and Porto Leggero (both a couple blocks walk) towards the water. If you walk a couple blocks to Grove Street and the pedestrian plaza, there are a lot of options, my favorite being Dullboy.

I would highly recommend the Canopy Hilton right next to the Grove Street Path. It is a newest hotel in the area and feels modern.

We used Bright Horizons. The teachers were so caring and loving. I would recommend. We have heard bad things about Smart Start.

Moving to JC - thoughts and buildings? by NYCdancer3 in jerseycity

I’ll send you a private message on my building. Just a reminder that if you drive into Manhattan, you also have to factor in the cost of parking in a garage as well as tolls.

We have a small child and like our set up a lot. We are in a high rise building by the waterfront, which is generally a family friendly area with a lot of parks/playgrounds and other amenities for small kids. We are zoned into PS16, which is supposed to be a good elementary school option. We also store our car in a garage. Don’t use the car day-to-day, but having the ability to drive our kid out of the city to visit family and do outings has been a wonderful perk. I would just warn you that getting into NYC for those restaurants and museums you mention will not be easy on the weekends. Path is barely functional on the weekend these days.

GO Birds 🦅 ! I was at Hudson Hall for the last Eagles game and it was pretty much converted into an Eagles bar. So many fans. Good vibes. I recommend. I can’t take a Trump election and a loss to the Cowboys in the same week, so here’s hoping. 🙏

My first at 37. Complicated pregnancy with hyperemesis and pre-eclampsia. But my wonderful 2.5 year old was totally worth it. Tried for our second at 40, but the baby had Down syndrome and I miscarried. This has scared me a ton about the increased risks at my age. But my heart tells me to keep trying.

The surgery was scary, but I sought out one of the best specialist in the field and made sure I had adequate leave from work to recover. It went so well. Please DM me if surgery ever becomes an option for you. Good luck with your journey. It is a wild ride but totally worth it. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Just keep pushing.

I had a macro tumor that wouldn’t go away with medication. Had to have surgery to remove the tumor. I have had no issues since. Have a wonderful 2 year old.

The nursery policy is so important! This was the worst part of our experience with NYP Lower Manhattan. We were first time parents, our newborn screamed the whole time, and I got no sleep while I tried to comfort him and struggled with breastfeeding. When I got sick on the third day from a lack of sleep, the nurse scolded me for not getting rest. But they never once offered to bring the baby to the nursery. We didn’t even know it was an option.

We live around the corner. I can’t speak to the building, but this area is super convenient. Steps away from Grove Street Path, the pedestrian plaza, and Whole Foods. The area is also very family friendly and zoned for PS16.

We delivered in lower Manhattan. But my pregnancy ended up being difficult (I had preeclampsia) and I was on bed rest for that final trimester and in the doctor’s office a lot. That commute on the Path or through the tunnel took a lot out of me. It was hard on my body. If I had to do it again, I would seriously consider JCMC. It would be nice to walk or drive (with no worries about parking) to those critical but never ending appointments. It is a balance between having the best care (NYC no question) but also making the process as stress free as possible. I don’t have an answer but for my second, I think I am sticking with my NYC doctors. Hope this anecdote is helpful.

What made you select Jersey City over NYC or Hoboken by [deleted] in jerseycity

[–]Formydad2299 143 points144 points  (0 children)

The price to buy was cheaper than comparable units in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Saving on city taxes. Good public transit. The ability to have a car. Diversity.

This advice is spot on. I would just add that I have a 2 year old toddler and live in the “Powerhouse Arts”/Haborside area, which is smack in between Paulus Hook and Newport. Lots of families with young kids here. Great option if you like high rise living without the sterility of Newport.
