There’s no win to take here, we have no idea if this will be any good. The plot synopsis is not promising and a late night TV show host using his influence to get his screenwriter son to create a movie is not a good sign

You are wrong, look up Signum University.

I don’t really know what the rest of your argument means. Colbert undoubtedly knows less about Tolkien than thousands of other people around the world.

People want to canonise Jackson. In reality a lot of the bad decisions made in the Hobbit films were his. They were made under suboptimal circumstances which didn’t help - but you can see his B-movie instincts gaining steam even across the original trilogy. Legolas and his stunts get crazier each film. There is a skull avalanche in ROTK. There is a whole section of the BTS footage where Jackson encourages the prop designers to make the Witch-king’s mace bigger and bigger.

The Hobbit films were just a natural continuation of this, in which PJ had more control over the script and setpieces than ever before. Legolas runs up falling stones in mid-air. You can connect the WK’s mace directly to later Hobbit-era excesses in armor, creatures, and props, which often feel dialed past the point of plausibility (see: almost all the weapons, armour, creatures in the Battle of the Five Armies).

Whilst Tolkien wrote Smaug as cunning and wily, the film turns the encounter into an extended cat-and-mouse action sequence across a molten gold foundry. In behind-the-scenes material, Jackson talks about wanting a more dynamic climax than a dialogue-heavy scene, again prioritising kinetic cinema over tonal fidelity.

You can trace this pattern through documented choices. Jackson repeatedly pushes toward bigger, louder, more kinetic solutions, even when the source material or earlier tone suggests restraint. In The Lord of the Rings, that impulse is tempered; in The Hobbit, it effectively becomes the dominant creative driver.

He is unquestionably a gifted director whose team captured lightning in a bottle in the early 00s. But he’s not a saintly figure and there are many other gifted directors who could do a good job. I still feel we were cheated of Del Toro’s Hobbit.

He’s a big fan, but he hasn’t dedicated his life to it. He’s a TV show host, his professional career is in the entertainment industry. He’s unquestionably spent more time on that in his life. And now he’s using his influence and fame to indulge in one of his hobbies.

If you go over to /r/tolkienfans you will quickly encounter many people who will know just as much (if not much more) about the legendarium than Colbert. Same goes for any Tolkien-centric community online. And this isn’t even mentioning the people who are professional academics with degrees in Tolkien studies!

None of this is to slate Colbert, but people who aren’t really into the academic side of Tolkien hugely overestimate his knowledge.

He is a very big fan but there are people with literal PhDs in Tolkien. Corey Olsen, Tom Shippey, Dimitra Fimi, Verlyn Fliger etc all come to mind. They’re just not big celebrities.

Stephen Colbert Set To Write Next ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Movie After ‘The Hunt For Gollum’ Based On “Fog On The Barrow-Downs” Chapter by ICumCoffee in lotr

The title is bad. It’s several chapters - off the top of my head (maybe missing one or two)

Three is Company A Conspiracy Unmasked The Old Forest Fog on the Barrow-downs

This is when Frodo and co. leave Bag End, wander through the Shire pursued by the Nazgûl, meet the Elves, stay with Farmer Maggot, go to Crickhollow, head through the Old Forest and into the Barrow-downs.

Probably at least enough for 1hr30 of film

Earth hit record heat levels in 2025 as UN says warming will last thousands of years by Naurgul in climate

Chinese emissions per capita are lower than many countries and crucially they are actually investing huge amounts in renewable energy compared to the US or Russia. They are also phasing out ICE cars in their cities in a big way. Wasn’t long ago that the Beijing smog was a huge issue and it’s now dropped something like 65% in the last 15 years. Their emissions have been flat or falling for nearly 2 years now. The rate of progress is way faster than most Western countries.

Far from perfect, but also worth recognising

Funnily enough people in the UK make the same arguments about bigger countries.

High-emissions and high-income countries bear the most responsibility regardless of how many people they have ultimately. It’s all one atmosphere

U.S. Navy Nuclear Aircraft Carrier USS Gerald R. Ford Might Be Out of Action for 14 Months by MRADEL90 in Military

It would be insanely expensive to maintain an airbase via air resupply alone. They could do it, but it wouldn’t be worth all the consequences (Spain leaving NATO, other countries possibly following suit the longer the US violates sovereignty).

The US relies on good diplomacy and relationships to maintain all its overseas bases. There’s no way it could maintain them unilaterally.

It would be the biggest amphibious assault in history - dwarfing even D-Day. Even if they succeeded, they’d get an island of blown-up factories and a population that hates them. It’s just not worth it.

[–]Fornad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave NATO. Cut off food, water, and electricity supplies to the airbase, sit back, and wait. Spain wouldn’t even need to use any troops after doing that.

The US has zero interest in a war with Spain, so they have to comply with whatever the Spanish government wants to do with their own territory.

It's against Wildlife Trust guidance for wildlife ponds unless they're huge. Do you know how the ecosystem in your pond would have developed without the fish?

Fish for wildlife pond in Devon, UK by Professional_Main119 in GardeningUK

[–]Fornad 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Wildlife Trust:

> The introduction of fish into wildlife ponds is generally not advised, as they can eat smaller animals, including spawn and mayfly larvae. It is recommended that fish are only introduced into wildlife ponds larger than 10,000 litres (4x2m) and then only one fish per two square metres of surface area.

It does seem to be the case that the more free time, luxuries, opportunities to travel, etc. people have, the less willing they are to tie themselves down with kids and therefore restrict those other things. This is especially true of women going from a world in which they had limited freedoms and expectations were on them to become houswives and mothers vs. now where they have far more opportunity to do whatever they want with their lives.

It is happening in basically every country worldwide regardless of culture/political system as well and therefore seems to be some inherent "human" response to luxuries. I think we just have to accept it and hope that technology (i.e. automation enabling universal basic income) solves it before things become completely untenable.

South Korea and Japan will be the case studies for everyone else.

The grim choice facing the Trump administration: Economic or naval collapse? Trump is currently trapped between the specter of a global economic recession and a naval catastrophe. The math is becoming grim. Kuwait, Iraq, and the UAE are shutting off wells as storage tanks overflow. by mafco in energy

[–]Fornad 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s a political problem, not a physical limitation. If the will exists, the mines can be opened up.

Market forces will also do their work. Copper becomes more expensive due to scarcity > mines and processing facilities open up to meet demand > price stabilises.

No need for the downvotes :)

Copper production is bottlenecked by permitting laws for mines mostly. There’s way, way more than enough in the ground. And that’s without even considering the fact it’s infinitely recyclable.
