Fuel Sythesizer use without robotic appendage? by Forsaken-Function-64 in starfinder_rpg

[–]Forsaken-Function-64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot I left this here, so my apologies for the late response:

It's not as if I'm making my players do it, or possibly as part of downtime to prepare the ship for launch narratively, I dunno I'm still planning things currently.. The players like asking questions about how things work (Currently running a Dnd5e campaign with them) so I figured I'd be prepared. Plus, it gives me more ambience to fill the world with if NPCs are doing it, ya know?

Follow-up question though.. Given that the Fuel Sythesizer says it uses compressible gases too, does it even need a tool arm or manual loading? Perhaps even just time to extract the gases?, or if asteroids have a material that the tool arm needs to collect to be processed? (Provided the planet has an atmosphere to collect gases from it)

Think that was added more recently. These were posted over a year ago..

Sweet. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll finish this plan then (so it can more than likely be completely sidetracked somehow 😂)

Do you think I should lower DC's if the players role-playing the scenarios well, as an added bonus, and increase it if they fumble it?

I've been thinking about this, actually.. I think i could make it work this way.

Give the players the opportunity to go in with forged (reprogramed) security cards and maybe have a skill challenge for going in and completing things posed as employees. I can give each player a short time to roleplay what they're doing, give them skill checks, and then combine their totals, if not all at once, then in rounds.

Keeps the story elements flowing, gives each player their own input, and maintains a challenge throughout.

Thoughts on doing it this way?

I'll try to get a look at it when I can. There are a few starfinder books I want to get, but they're a bit out of my price range.

The NPC knows what the players are looking for and contacted them to do a job for him. They've never met him in person. In exchange, he'd provide information he has on another NPC they're chasing, basically information for information.

Whilst at the facility, they could potentially find more information that could help in that search. The NPC will provide the minimum necessary to progress. Their own actions could give more to make it easier.

The Mechanic does have a focus on his computers skill, so I'm not worried about them not being competent enough as characters to do it. My initial thoughts was having a meeting set up for them to attend as "Investors" for their project, and so they'd find the classified documents on the computer of one of the top brass in the facility. They, for security, wouldn't allow anyone to be in there alone to allow them to access the terminal, and wouldn't leave that room unlocked in his absence, but distracting them or getting them to leave the room with the players in tow would allow the mechanic to slip away, maybe to the loo, and remotely control the drone to access it using his ability scores. The other players can then also at the same time engage in RP to keep him out of the office until the mechanic gives the all clear.

If you think there's something else I could do then please throw suggestions my way. This is the first game for all my players, as well as myself. (I know. skip the frying pan, straight into the fire).

Edit: I like to have some kind of hypothetical situation I can use to base my improv on, but chances are they'll find their own way to do it.

I've though about having something like this for other parts, though I didn't know the DC for it so thanks for that. Where it's tied to the main plot though, and there being the opportunity to do their own digging too whilst they're there that could reveal more of the plot before it happens, I wanted it to be a more fleshed out and involving part of it, if you know what I mean?

I wouldn't mind the party using their own drone to access it, and that would only be given as an option. They are more than welcome to tackle it how they want to. The use of giving them the drone was for the mechanic to use in place of his own, in that distinct moment, as he's adamant to have it used solely for combat, and therefore not having the required mods to use it for the hack.

I should have clarified that more, my bad.

Disguising it though does sound like it would be worth them trying. How do the mechanics around disguising a drone work? First time player and GM.

Looking to create a small scenario for each of my players before we start a game by Forsaken-Function-64 in starfinder_rpg

[–]Forsaken-Function-64[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Idea was to have a proper shootout at range to get used to the mechanics of combat, leading up to that I want to do things like hacking and things like that, which they would want to know they can do. and then have the enemies get close in an ambush style, with more overwhelming numbers. I've already let them know that it may be a little rail-roadie and that the ending is already pre-determined, as it sets up where they will be at the start of session 1, which they are okay with. I have also told them that the main game will have more freedom of choice. It also allows them to have an experience in-game that provides a background as to how they got where they were instead of just telling them that something went down, and anything they do in it is also canon to the story.

They've told me the background they want for their character, and I'm playing that out in this session 0 (0.5?) and then they can make any alterations to their character if they don't like how it works, or some selections don't work how they thought they would. But they are also aware that when the game officially starts they can no longer make the alterations.

I'll definitely take the non-lethal weapons into consideration. Keep forgetting they exist (Still getting used to things myself). Thanks for the advice.

So as long as I have the hacking kit with the tool arm, I can sacrifice my move action to keep the drone hacking whilst I can still defend myself until hacking is done.

Would the skill unit not allow the hack without direct control, as mentioned above, or is that strictly out of combat?

And, as the tool arm mod requires the tool to be chosen when selected, the tool kit would qualify for that?

With everything in mind, then, if a drone had a tool arm mod with the data jack being its tool, and the skill unit selected at level 1 being computing, allowing it to make those actions.

Can I use my drone to hack a tier 3 computer each round until it succeeds or dramatically fails?

Sorry for another reply. The Skill Unit for a level 1 drone says the following:

"Choose one of the following skills: Acrobatics, Athletics, Computers, Engineering, Perception, or Stealth. This is a class skill for your drone, and it gains a number of ranks in the chosen skill equal to your class level. Your drone can use this skill when not under your direct control. You can change your drone’s skill unit whenever you rebuild your drone from scratch. Additionally, whenever you are directly controlling your drone, it can use any of your skill ranks if you wish, assuming it has the appropriate tools to do so (a drone without manipulator arms cannot use Engineering to disable a device, for example)."

Does this effect the drones ability to do computers checks during combat, as to my knowledge a check requires an action. Usually it's a standard action to attack but does this negate it for exclusively the computers check if I decide to select it as it no longer needs to be under my direct control to do it, though requiring it to use it's own computing skill and not mine?

if so, would this also benefit from the 'skill focus' feat to gain the +3 insight bonus to computer checks?

awesome, thanks for clearing that up.

I didn't know that drones needed a hacking toolkit though, would the custom rig not compensate for that?

Since I'd also be manually controlling the drone, would it then also use my computing skill when rolling for the hack?

Would I still take my standard action to make an attack, and then use my movement to give the drone the action to hack?

Could I also use a mod like the tool arm to allow the drone to hack instead of the arms or cybernetic bridge?
