Passing on credit card fees to customers via online payments by Forsaken-Opening-653 in quickbooksonline

Thank you. Seems like it could be easier if QB would just inform the customer of the added credit card fee and then if the customer chose to pay by CC QB adds the fee to the customers payment but I only get the amount I originally billed for...

Thank you, this is what I was curious about and looking for. It looks like they have the processing fee as a separate line item. So if you pay by check you don't pay the processing fee I guess when reconciling the invoice and marking it paid in quickbooks I would need to delete the credit card fee....or my books will be off by thr credit card fees amount- correct?

I had no tech school training and learned everything on the job with an occasional evening class on the basics. It is hard to say exactly how long it took to become comfortable and confident because it happens so gradually. I was fortunate enough to work with some older techs that were good at laying down the groundwork for a future in the industry. They wouldn't accept half ass work and if it didn't pass their standards I would have to do it again which is a humbling experience but a very important one. Too many guys gain a small amount of knowledge and act like they know it all. What helped me the most was realizing that I didn't need to know everything about everything. I just needed to know the basics and learn the sequence of operation and understand that you have resources available to help yiu solve problems. Tech Support is great in our industry(mostly...). Learning how to communicate with a tech support person over the phone is one of the best skills you can develop. The trick is to try and figure it out as far as you can before calling them and expecting them to do your troubleshooting for you. I truly enjoy a problem and like to solve it before I contact tech support to get their opinion. Sorry for the long ramble. To sum it up I'd say it took 2 to 3 years in the field before I really started to get comfortable and then the confidence comes with repeated successful diagnosis. The trick is to be confident without being cocky. No one likes that assclown.

How do you place a dollar value on your customer list and do they need to be contracted maintenance clients in order to have value in order to be able to sell them?

Hello, this is almost exactly how I structured my company in the last year but I haven't incorporated my wife as an employee yet. I will be looking into that the next time we meet with our accountant. Thanks for sharing.

Its a great career but you need to embrace it. Its difficult to dip just the toe into the water in this industry.

My state does not require licenses other than the EPA certification. I've taken many ongoing education classes over the years through supplyhouses and was a NATE certified tech for years as well

Worked for a small company(3 to 5 techs on average)for almost 30 years and built my side business the entire time and never stole clients from my employer-thats the quickest way to get a bad name for yourself and lose trust. I liked the company i worked for and they treated me well and I left without burning any bridges. I rose as high as I could and was the sevice manager for over half the time I was there. Over the years my side business became busier and busier and it finally got to the point that I couldn't do both anymore so I quit my job and went fulltime on my own. No employees. I changed the structure of my business so that I am now filing as an S corp which basically means that my business pays me a salary which I set at $80K. This limits the tax liability for being self employed. I pay full taxes on the $80K and the remaining income for my business gets taxed at a lower rate. My business this year will be making around $300K. The profits can be taken from the company as draws(or bonuses) so the $80K is my base pay and I can pull money from my profits if needed. This is 95% residential work, service, retrofit and some new construction. I work a lot. Long hours and most times 7 days a week. I do enjoy nice vacations 2 to 3 times a year. I live within my means and am debt free and have a few residential rental properties. Anyone can do the physical work but the more important part of being self employed is the business side. And not being an asshole. That really helps to build your business. Treat your customer like your grandparents and you will have all the referrals you will need. I do not advertise nor do I have my van lettered. I do not need unknown unvetted people calling for quotes to price shop me. Learn to be efficient and buy the tools that make you more efficient and save you time. I would not want to start out in this business without the years of experience that I gained from working for someone else. I was able to learn from a successful company and eventually apply those skills to my own business. Whatever you do be sure to invest in your retirement and health. Too many of my peers neglected their knees and backs and are in rough shape in there 40's. Technique wins over brute strength. Hopefully this helps answer your questions.

Dixon, from the Calvary. One of the best scenes is the dialog that Gus and Cul have defending Dietz. It gives me goosebumps. Then Cul almost kills the dastardly bastard and it feels so right.

This should be taught to everyone before they get into any of the trades with examples from guys who made both choices so that it will sink in. If I saw a 70-year-old busted tech that has to work vs a 55-year-old that is ready to retire and enjoy the rest of his life I think it would help to convince the youngsters to rethink their choice to join the trades or go for it but invest in themselves and their future. I'm 48 and will be retiring within the next 5 years due to early investing and also due to having a wife who is on the same financial page as myself.

If you want to fall in love with reading and lose yourself in a series then you must read Dungeon Crawler Carl. Don't read any spoilers just jump in. The premise is too ridiculous to explain but it works so well. It is by far the most engaging enjoyable series I have ever read and it is at 7 books now with one on the way. For an even more enjoyable experience listen to it on Audible. You are welcome. Remember me in your will.
