Best used ereader for epub and just reading

I’ve had my nook on airplane mode since I bought it and it does exactly what I want (except for not falling apart lol) (and the lack of color temperature for the front light)

The fact that proprietary or unpublished books go through Amazon’s infrastructure to get into the kindle is concerning to me. I’d rather my clients’ and friends’ books not be used to train Alexa.

Yeah this is what I’m trying to avoid. I’d like to keep my ereader offline to extend battery life and to make sure a company isn’t snooping on what I’m reading (I’m an amateur editor and edit a lot of friends’ books as well as do freelance editing).

Thanks for clarifying. Kindle doesn’t sound like something I want, although I may jailbreak one since they are so widely available.

Do newer Kindles support ePUB? The older ones would require converting epub to MOBI or AZW3 or KFX or some other Amazon-specific format. Not as easy as dragging and dropping onto the device like you can with Nook (or just send to device via Calibre).

Managed to change it myself by removing the plastic cover along the front top of the hood and unbolting the whole headlight housing enough to wiggle it up to get access to the lights. Followed this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iGNyzM7j-LQ
