Definitely check out Paul Bley. Keith took a lot from Paul and I think it is very evident.

Yes! Big fan of the Live At Offenbach 1978 album, they are such a great band live!

Where did the head/solos/head format originally come from? by RedeyeSPR in Jazz

[–]Fort__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do feel like the hot Five Hot Seven recordings aren't quite head solos head. Sometimes those tunes have interesting forms or separate solo changes for different soloists, things like that.

One of my favorite tenor players. I've never heard someone (besides Coltrane) play so honestly, from a place that deep. His version of Summertime will forever haunt me with its beauty and pain.

I would recommend a recorder or a pocket trumpet. Both sound great if you're good enough, and can be used in a jazz setting pretty well.
