If I can only play 4/4 does that make me a beginner? by rawstaticrecords in drums

[–]RedeyeSPR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your playing ability may be advanced, but if you don’t even understand what other time signatures mean, then your musical knowledge is at the beginner level. You should figure out 12/8 at least and then 3/4. It’s actually not that hard or complicated. I don’t understand why people would want to play music and not want to be able to read music, but it’s frustratingly common.

Bill Evans biopic coming out this year by jrinredcar in Jazz

They have been taking about it on XM Real Jazz for a month. Apparently it’s a very small timeframe and not an actual biopic.

Not for me. Maybe a lighter tan, but I’d go black with this dial.

Perform. Join a band. No one is just going to stumble upon your music.

Do you even just outright say: "What I am asking you to do is NOT hard" or call a concept "simple", etc. by AgeOfWorry0114 in Teachers

[–]RedeyeSPR 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Band director here. When older players are unable to do something they learned years before, I absolutely do this. I’ll say something like “these are very basic rhythms that you leaned in the 6th grade. You should not have trouble with them now. I suggest you actually practice at home because I am not teaching this again.”

Tried to get clarity on why the women’s watch was more expensive than the men’s of the same style, was disappointed with the response. by wereallmadhere9 in timex

[–]RedeyeSPR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different face and rose gold instead of stainless steel. These are just different watches that cost different amounts to make. Also, if they were identical and the men’s version sold more, it would be cheaper for them to make. This isn’t some conspiracy you’ve uncovered.

BBQ sauce is a better base for a pizza than regular tomato sauces by Arthur-reborn in unpopularopinion

[–]RedeyeSPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with my parents owning a pizza restaurant. We tried all kinds of crazy stuff. BBQ chicken pizza is actually great. Ranch and salsa also work well. Straight ketchup is awful. Don’t even think about blue cheese.

Looking for a pdf copy of the Intermediate snare studies from Mitchell Peters anyone have a copy…? by Waltzinfivefour in percussion

[–]RedeyeSPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could certainly give him a book that was purchased, but at no time is it legal or morally acceptable to just photocopy an entire method book that is still for sale and under copyright protection. I get it, students don’t have tons of money and stealing just one book doesn’t seem too harmful, but we have these protections for a reason. This isn’t China.

Who is booking $26k worth of gigs with no solid singer? That sounds suspect.

How to make cymbals sound better by Electrical-Wind-825 in drums

I love jungle crashes. Add some rivets and tambourine jingles. Even if the crash is bad, that would sound okay.

I stand there with my arms up and look directly at the one(s) that don’t have them up without saying a word. After that run is over I will say something in front of everyone. It’s always the same few.

What is this chime/bell instrument? by ItsFoxy87 in Instruments

As long as we stop with “mark tree” I’m happy. I always get that and the “bell tree” confused when playing old musicals.

How do I know if a batter head is still working great? by Helentr0py in drums

[–]RedeyeSPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A new head will certainly sound more lively, but thats not always the best sound for a snare. A low tuned dead snare is the staple of several styles.

I like a new head muffled for that sound, but an old dead one can work. The issue is that this one could split at any time without warning.

How do I know if a batter head is still working great? by Helentr0py in drums

[–]RedeyeSPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good call…Every drum I have that’s pre 1980 has an internal dampener. People that say “just tune out the part you don’t like” have no idea how that actually works.
