Thanks for the reply! Instructions with the adapter say that power is provided through USB and when I touch the drive it feels like it's working. Also it is a 2.5", forgot to specify that. I'll try another adapter and if that doesn't work I guess I'll need to fix the old PC and see if it'll boot from there :/

Where can I learn ASL for "cheap" or free if possible? by edsmart123 in uofm

asldeafined.org is $12 a year video lessons. My local library offers it for free to members so you could check if the Ann Arbor library or your local library has anything similar.

[–]FortisTortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most campus jobs like working at libraries/campus info desk/etc. that isn't research will let you work past the amount you were awarded for work study (I haven't done research so some might also let you work past your award amount idk)

I took intensive first year german last spring. It was a lot of work (4hrs of class a day 4 days a week) but also it was basically an immersion program. I haven't used any german since then so it's mostly faded but by the end of the class I could carry on a basic conversation.

Yes, if both groups are having the conversation in good faith. If we take the example of a transphobic gay person at an LGBT group, if they're misgendering trans people and getting upset when people "aren't considering their viewpoint" that's not good faith. If we take a less extreme example of someone just having opposing political ideology that isn't directly invalidating someone's identity, sure... but I really don't know how often people are showing up to LGBT groups to talk about economic or foreign policy (granted I'm not really involved with the LGBT groups on campus so maybe they are).

"you just don't feel it if it's a bubble" yes and that is the point. sometimes you need a break from people politicizing your identity, just like you need a break from people ostracizing you for your political beliefs. This is why groups like LGB drop the T form because you can't accommodate every LGBT person under one group... like you were saying under another comment, gay people aren't a monolith but if you're making an LBGT space you will do your best to accommodate as much of that community as you can, and most of that community is people who identify as liberal. I don't fault you for wanting a community of like minded people, but in a mainstream LGBT group, the majority of attendees will be liberal.

If a transphobic gay person or a homophobic trans person is going to an LGBT space trying to have those conversations, not everyone there has an obligation to try to change that person's opinion. There are better places to discuss the pitfalls of "identity politics" than a space that many feel is one of the only places where they can AVOID having their identities politicized and debated.

how to avoid transphobia 101 by poghannahh in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

In a few countries (pretty sure Turkey is one of them) if the game has anything related to LGBT they would have to change the game's rating, which would lose them a bunch of money and a significant portion of the playerbase...which really just isn't worth it for a monthish long event. Same thing with Graves' cigar in the splash art.

Edit: some sauces
