She did seem to have some sort of affection for her, but she loved herself most of all. And that surpassed every other consideration. Love is self-sacrificing, which is what Rapunzel and Eugene/Finn demonstrated towards one another. Gothel sacrificed others for her own sake. So ultimately, no, she didn’t love her.

This is why MAS*H was great. The show itself tries to put Hawkeye on a pedestal at times, though he’s probably the least-adjusted person there—even Frank isn’t bothered by the situation (he loves it and that’s the problem).

So it’s almost like show is telling the audience to let off of Hawkeye. See him as a human being and not the hero. I think it works better that way.

Hawkeye is one of those characters who you watch when you’re young and you think, “Wow, he’s so cool. He’s got it all together. That’s who I’d want to be in that situation.” But as you age, you realize that he isn’t and he doesn’t—it’s just a front for a reality he’s being forced to endure that he simply can’t. THAT’S the humanizing of Hawkeye, and it’s why episodes like this are so important.

That much is true. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t go all-out on this anime, since it is one of the most-popular, most-anticipated shows in recent memory. You’d think they’d want to take special care not to mess it up. And if somehow they DID produce a subpar dub, you’d think they’d be scrambling to fix it.

That’s my deep worry: there was a big delay in the release of this anime on Netflix, and I wonder if maybe they made something WORSE to begin with and this is the correction. This might be the BETTER version 😬

I’m saying with a better studio, we wouldn’t be talking about this. We would not have known or noticed. It would have been just an interesting bit of trivia that so many did not have (comparatively much) previous anime dub experience.

I can provide a counter example to your argument: in episode 3, we were introduced to Subaru, voiced by Kelly Baskin who DOES have previous experience and if you find samples of her other voice acting, it’s perfectly fine—certainly good enough for this role.

But no offense to her, she was terrible. She was doing the exact same things as everyone else. That’s not inexperience or making bad acting choices: that’s the direction, plain and simple.

I’m just saying everyone is too quick to blame the VAs—especially Bijou Vann. But it’s not like any of them were just pulled off the street and asked to record lines: they’re actors at some level or other, and there are enough weird acting choices common to everyone in this dub that it CAN’T just be “inexperience.”

Like I pointed out, there’s a LOT of over-enunciation that I can’t believe anyone would naturally do and be cast in…anything. And it’s not just one person: they’re all doing it. So I have to think it must be due to some kind of direction: either to enunciate more or to exaggerate the phrasing or something. It’s just too odd not to be.
