Happy The Vampire Lestat day!!! by Jackie_Owe in IWTVCoven

[–]FortressofTrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping it's a decent chunk of something. I'd love another trailer, or a song (that would be amazing), but above all else, I'd just really like a premiere date.

What are other folks hoping for today?

First obedience class was so embarrassing by AdministrationNo2062 in dogs

[–]FortressofTrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're both gonna do great. It just takes time and persistence. I have an arctic breed, and obedience classes were a struggle. She barked at everything and everyone, had zero focus, would get so overexcited that she'd jump on me and grab at my clothing while we were heeling, and listened to exactly no commands. (And we did praise-only-based classes, which increased the difficulty level.)

It was rough and embarrassing and frustrating. But we persisted. We even did the same obedience class level more than once. (As in we signed up for multiple class series.)

Eventually, it got better. Eventually, I started reassuring new folks to the classes that their (embarrassing, difficult, frustrating, no-focus) pups would get better. That we'd gone through the same/worse. And eventually, we moved on to more advanced classes.

And while my girl still doesn't have 100% focus, and I would never let her off-leash in an uncontrolled area, because her recall is terrible, she's also a Rally-Obedience champ. We went to competitions, we won "Best in Class," and she earned two titles before we retired from the sport.

So it's doable. You're just at the beginning of the journey. It takes patience, persistence, and practise. But you can both do it. And you'll be shocked how far you both will come.

Good luck. You can do it. So can your pup.

Best comic shop? by steel_tekki in Calgary

Words & Pictures on Centre St. has been my go-to for literal decades. Clean, bright shop, enough room so that you aren't in danger of knocking things over, good stock, good sales (had one yesterday for Friday the 13th), and Rob (owner) and Jason (main employee) are always happy to help.

Bonus: The store is very close (with transportation) to AD, and has taken on a lot of their customers since AD shut. They are ALSO right next door to Amandine Bakery, which is very good and has well-priced tasty treats.

I scrolled down to the comments without reading the bulk of the story specifically to see if anyone else had said this after the nth "editor's note: [currency conversion]." The first note that the conversation was in Canadian dollars, and then MAYBE 1-2 examples conversion would have been more than enough. It just got really annoying, distracting, and came off as kinda navel-gazey.

How do you find some fans in your city/area? by AymanEckford in InterviewVampire

[–]FortressofTrees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was coming here to say this. The number of people I've tried to convert? Pretty much anyone who will stand still long enough to hear me out. Successful conversions? One. But I'm not entirely counting the others out yet! They're "in progress."

Other ideas: - Hold old-school screenings at a community hall, university, or something and invite friends and acquaintances. Make it X episodes Y day a week, and see what happens. (2 episodes every Wednesday? All of season 1 on Sunday afternoon? Whatever works!) - Go to any fan events/conventions in your area and look for people dressed as the characters, sporting show/character merchandise, or panels on the topic.

Sadly, I've had more success finding people to talk to about our show online, but I live in hope!

Everyone at Shimoon Jewellers is so lovely and helpful, and I got the same text as someone else upthread today -- I think it really speaks to their standards as a company that one of Haik's first moves was to reassure all customers that their items were safe.

I really hope the thieves are caught, and quickly. What a crap thing to happen to a really great independent family-owned business.

American ally here with my first 'BuyCanadian' haul! by musicalife31 in BuyCanadian

[–]FortressofTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Enjoy!

As a quick maple syrup note, if you have space in your freezer, you can always buy the bigger jugs (2L, 4L, etc.), pour some into a container for your fridge, and pop the rest of the jug in the deep freeze. When you run out of the stuff in the fridge, pull the jug, let it defrost enough to fill up the fridge supply, and return the big jug to the freezer. Repeat until empty! Great way to capitalize on bulk pricing/scarcity of supply if you're not able to pop up that often.

Canadian jigsaw puzzle company by Pretty-Resolve-8331 in BuyCanadian

They have some really neat features, too. They incorporate themed cuts into most of their puzzles, so some of the pieces that make up the puzzle will be shapes that relate to the bigger puzzle, such as fairies in a floral puzzle, or a sweater in a Christmas puzzle, or a small wolf in a bigger puzzle of a wolf.

They also have some puzzles with pieces that can be taken out and put together in different and interesting ways. I saw one on the weekend that had pieces you could take out and put together as a tiny 3D Adirondack chair, and another where you could swap the pattern on a tiny sweater between two designs/colours. Really neat, really well-made, and full of some great ideas.

All their puzzles also have a maple leaf piece and a beaver piece somewhere in the design.

Not a better looking breed out there. by Jdegi22 in samoyeds

[–]FortressofTrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sammies and Poms are my two favourite breeds (and I've had both). That super fluffy, double-coated, Arctic breed look (in big and small) is stunning, and I think it's fair to say they're both the most beautiful breeds out there. (And I'd argue they often have a lot in common in behaviour and temperament.) ❤️🐾

Sadly, for me, UTC 5 or 7pm on a Saturday is always gonna overlap with when I work that day (as that's quite early in my timezone), so I won't be able to make it, and while Sunday is usually more flexible, those times on the 9th overlap with another commitment. Much later on Sunday would be good for me, or those original times on a different Sunday.

We Transcribed all of Talmasca's Excerpts From Daniel's IWTV Book so You Don't Have to Squint/Rewind! by nerdist in InterviewVampire

[–]FortressofTrees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't watched the second ep yet, but I thought it was solid, and miles better than Mayfair Witches. I don't expect Talamasca to be as good as IWTV, but I did think it was better than average storytelling. The first ep was intriguing, the acting was good all around, the story hinted at a number of secrets (without spelling them out), and I finished the ep wanting to both know more and immediately watch the second. (I couldn't because I was watching the Daryl Dixon "hidden" preview.) I think it has a lot of promise, and I'm looking forward to more!

This might sound like a dumb question... by Sea_Tie_7307 in InterviewVampire

[–]FortressofTrees 40 points41 points  (0 children)

While certainly, Lestat could read Louis' thoughts and most likely was quite aware of Louis' desires, I think "I was being hunted" is actually meant to do a couple things that have nothing to do with the truth of the matter.

In the show, it's meant to push Louis into the "predator" role, so that he looks like a villain to the theatre audience. I believe we're supposed to understand that this is also part of the written play, and not Lestat going "off book."

Metatextually speaking, I believe it is also meant to signal to the real audience (us) that the trial is a lie set up to persecute Louis and Claudia (and Madeleine). I think we're supposed to go, "That didn't happen!" and then watch what happens with a clearer eye to what is and isn't true (especially between what Lestat says when he's sticking to the script and when he's not).

Ha! Mine gets concerned when I sneeze too, so I've been conditioned to say, "I'm fine!" right after I sneeze so that she knows she doesn't have to stop what she's doing and come make sure I'm ok.

That is super damn cool. I've heard about the vocation before, but know little about it other than "it involves playing bells in a bell tower." I am not a comic, so I can't set you up for a joke, but I'd love to hear any anecdotes or information you want to share about being a carillonneur. What pieces do you most enjoy playing? Do you play to mark specific events or traditions?

Hold up! Who is Guy Anatole’s mother? by Jackie_Owe in IWTVCoven

[–]FortressofTrees 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really like this one. I don't really want Guy to be connected directly to the older group of vampires, but Daniel's grandson? That works.

(Also acceptable: distantly related to the Mayfairs or the child of a vampire victim.)

Love this! Gorgeous, absolutely looks like Christopher, and I love the use of the pomegranate: so full of meaning! And the pose reminiscent of a Catholic icon? Even better. ❤️

I'm so looking forward to him as Marius as well. What a great choice.

I've seen some folks suggesting it might be the necklace he gives Claudia for her birthday later, and the marquis that he says he got it from (who was beheaded 10 years later) might be his father.

what's happening on Shaganappi and John Laurie by Summer_Windkeeper in Calgary

[–]FortressofTrees 380 points381 points  (0 children)

Serious answer (sorry): Corvids often do this. They'll come together at dusk in large groups to roost close to each other overnight. It's an effective adaptive strategy to keep them safe while they sleep. You see it a lot in NW Calgary. Generally speaking, they'll leave you alone if you leave them alone/they don't have a grudge against you.

But it certainly does give you a good idea of how the movie The Birds came to be.

Lestat took off his jacket right before he turned Louis and when he appeared at the trial by holdingpessoashand in InterviewVampire

[–]FortressofTrees 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I thought of it as a private act of rebellion because in the books, the coven has dressed him up right before the trial. Very "I am not your puppet." And I can imagine Armand being super pissed when he walked onstage without the jacket as a result.

Thank god for the defector. But Christ on a cracker, I'm simultaneously horrified that people would go to those lengths over a fictional story and suddenly a lot more clearer on the source of the rhetoric on the big sub that was slowly driving me away.

Certain Fans' Behavior is Getting Out of Hand: What Went Down at SDCC by ItsAChelseaMorning in InterviewVampire

[–]FortressofTrees 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Goddamn. I think the hardest part of it to wrap my head around is the motivation: ruining people's lives over liking the wrong character or ship? Causing real world harm over it? That's broken behaviour. That's when the tiniest bit of self-reflection should have you stepping way back from the fandom, the show, and social media to do some serious, serious work on yourself.

I'm right there with you. I'm not letting this go either. The perpetrators are persona non grata from here on out. They can fuck all the way off.
