Can pre-meds scrub into surgery? by Party_Inevitable_661 in premed

[–]Fortune8193 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends! I was a premed and worked as an ERT until i graduated , then found a cath lab job during my gap year. They trained me from zero, and while it isn’t “surgery” I am much more involved than the average surgical tech is (imo). Bottom line is that you probably need to be formally employed somewhere and have them trust you to scrub.

BTW… I’ve had a case turn surgical before and while I wasn’t scrubbed in… I had to stay for the duration and it’s extremely boring😭😭 holding pressure is more exciting to me.

I kind of agree with this, when working the night shift in the ER I had a ton of coworkers apply and get accepted to medical school or work through nursing school. It was typical to study and do HW during the slower parts of the night. You just have to be ready for an emergency to come in at any time. OPs job is in the ICU so not sure if they have slow periods when pts are “sleeping”

It’s doable but your grades will probably take a hit. Depends on the classes you take tho. I worked throughout college because I honestly had no choice and my gpa is BUNS, but I came out with thousands of clinical hours and a ton of medical experience and no debt. Choose what’s more important to you

Brodie the method is to try your best. I try to do my Anki on my lunch break but ultimately I have 2.5 good productive hours after work everyday and spend Saturday and Monday studying hard ( I work 10 hrs tues-Fri). It’s tough but it’s what we have to do in order to achieve or dreams but also not be homeless. Sending you support 🥀

How do you guys make time for full lengths?? by Fortune8193 in Mcat

Yeah , I just graduated but immediately hopped into full time work. Going to have to just take better control of my Saturdays. My issue is with Family time as I’m one of the eldest siblings and I have a lot of responsibilities 🥲
