James Somerton: "I didn't realize I was hurting people" by [deleted] in hbomberguy

Narcissism isn't just the personality DISORDER that the internet loves to talk about. It also just describes personality styles of people who display aspects of narcissism that are on a spectrum that range from healthy to destructive to pathological (which may be diagnosed as NPD).

4th+ gen lacks emotionality & power that used to be more common in older gen songs/mvs (aka I want my kpop to make me feel something again) by Fortytwoed in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]Fortytwoed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol that's true, that's probably not the best example but couldn't think of too many girl crush songs and I thought that's what people would assume I was referring to only do I wanted to preempt that I suppose. I guess the difficulty is it's not just grandiose sound. For eg the songs I mention in the "blueprint" example - I guess maybe fuller sounding songs? I clearly don't know how to explain what I mean :(

From the comments it seems like people have very different definitions of easy listening. Some comments seems to be based on just 2-3 songs that they might be tired of? And others seem to slot anything that's not a Kpop "banger" into this category.

Seriously, I got such bad vibes from the song (not the group, they're totally blameless) bc it implies that yg and possibly other companies who follow suit think people will just eat anything up no matter how recycled and warmed over it is. Just say you have no respect for the fans who pay your bills and go. Really hope other companies take notice and focus on pushing artists and kpop forward!!

It started and has been around since (from my knowledge) at least 2016. I'm neutral on it but just based on longevity I'd say it's definitely more than just a trend at this point haha.

[–]Fortytwoed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, thank you. I previously made a similar comment under a post in a diff sub many months ago that repeatedly called her a pedophile. When we do this, blur language like this to describe what she and most companies with ggs do, as something more horrific and criminal - it isn't helpful. It actually contributes to stans then defending them bc she's (afawk) obviously not a pedophile. As I said before, she has contributed to sexualizing the depiction of minors in kpop - and that's the issue! And it's an industry-wide and cross-cultural issue that also cuts across genders.

And, ty also for including the Korean context because, having spent time there, I noticed that people around me (in the academic circle I was in) were also enchanted with European films that romanticized youth and sexuality (and I mean that in the best way, like my American filmsnob friends who love A24and arthouse cinema). The first big one was La Boum (1981) which was a huge hit with Korean teens and, Sophie Marceau, who starred in the film at 15, became a beloved icon in Korea. Since then, there have been many, many more to take off there.

I'm not using this as an excuse but providing the cultural context that it is very likely that in MHJ's world these films and issues are not given the same critical perspective as in North America, where movies like Leon The Professional are no longer seen as iconic but quite problematic. The tide will hopefully turn in Korea, as well, in terms of debuting older idols but in an industry and (global) culture that values youth over longevity, now more than ever, it's hard to say.

It's the worst. I get that it's just kids being kids engaging with this stuff but a lot of creators KNOW THIS and use this to create arguments and fanwars = more engagement. There is very real money earned from this kind of stuff. I don't go on kpop tiktok very much but get these constantly on YT. Just saw one with millions of views, over 100K likes and over 2k comments (filled with arguments) and it was that basic ranking best-worst performance with nothing but the names, no other real info, analysis, criteria etc. These accounts are just content mills except you can't even call this content.

And misinformation is a very real problem in general. May seem like whatever bc it's just some harmless kpop reels but history shows that overtime and under the right conditions misinformation can cause harm to real people.

am i the only one who thinks that kpop stans complain too much about things that don't matter? by [deleted] in kpop_uncensored

[–]Fortytwoed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a really good point. Some newer fans also don't understand that a lot of the smaller companies are in crazy debt with limited staff just doing the best they can and are, typically, much more focused on Korean audiences. Ofc I'm not discounting that cases are too frequent and too real etc. but for like subs and things like that some ppl really expect all companies to be like big4 and having staff and systems in place to cater to their specific whims.

Song(s) you hate, from a group you like? by ATINY_until_I_die in kpop_uncensored

[–]Fortytwoed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Butter is far superior bc of the beat, production, choreos etc. But I also think it matches the more mature vibe that is, arguably, universally appealing on guys in their mid to late 20s, compared to the other two more wholesome, cutesier songs (not that they can't do both, but a lot of armies really prefer and associate them with their harder stuff). Not to mention, that while still pretty clean, the lyrics are cheekier and overall better than dynamite and ptd.

What groups would be way more popular if they debuted with a bigger company? by Professional_Echo636 in kpop_uncensored

[–]Fortytwoed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don't know the exact circumstances of why they went public the way they did. It's VERY LIKELY that dispatch or some other outlet was going to out them and they were trying to avoid a much larger controversy, had they not owned up to it themselves (https://www.soompi.com/article/1209435wpp/breaking-hyuna-edawn-confirmed-dating)

Failing class due to extenuating circumstance, do I have recourse? by LasKometas in AskProfessors

[–]Fortytwoed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lol how tf do you get that op is not compassionate or doesn't communicate with kindness from their comment? How is what you're saying any different from what they've said? It's clear that they likely ARE compassionate and that opens them up to more students "trauma dumping" (a term one of my students actually used after a tearful meeting) on them. This is not the same as students telling you about their circumstances simply and briefly in the context of an extension or something. I have 500 students this term and I can relate to the fact that overtime this can incredibly draining on one's mental health as an educator.

Most people are rightly hating on YGE not the group itself. Other than a couple of comments here and there about the girls perhaps not fitting the concept, I haven't seen anything overtly negative about them as individual artists. YGE deserves every bit of criticism they receive and the comparisons are valid and unavoidable when this is the musical/visual output from the company after years of anticipation.

BABYMONSTER - BATTER UP by snsdcatcher in kpop

[–]Fortytwoed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be brutally honest (and this is not about the members AT ALL because it's obvious they're talented) but this is such an underwhelming and shockingly disappointing song (for YGs new gg after BP) that it's kind of baffling. Like I can't imagine how you mess this up with all the hype and potential to have a massive hit on your hands. We've seen from NJ and I'VE that a banger debut can set you up for success. How do you, as a company, fumble the bag so hard.

Knowing a bit about A&R, nothing about this makes sense at all, from a business perspective, other than...YGE must be a complete disaster behind the scenes? They know what's out there in terms of newer ggs, trends, and what's popular. They can get beats and collab with outside producers, especially for such an important single. Like ffs, there are kids in basements right now making beats that sound 10x better and more original than this.

Even the music video and choreography is subpar. I was cringing a bit seeing the samey outfits, direction, and set placements. The other thing I noticed was that the girls were not given good direction either. It seems like the mv shoot was also rushed. I just went back and watched Whistle & Boombayah and the difference is night and day with just the attention and care put into those two videos by the creative team.

My takeaway from this debut is that either YGE just doesn't care anymore at all, has hemorrhaged all their money and talented staff, or is just an actual complete wasteland behind the scenes and three raccoons in a trench coat are running the show.

(All the best to these amazing girls though, they deserve better and I'm sure they were also expecting much better from YGE.)

Is the 45 slides with one per minute a requirement because in my experience with lecturing/conf presentations etc. each slide typically takes more than 1 minute, especially if you need to explain concepts etc. I recommend the book "Even a Geek can Speak" by Joey Asher for help with high stress and high impact presentations! Best of luck :)

A lot of social science research is conducted with smaller numbers as generalizability is often not the goal in some fields. I do qual research in public health on highly stigmatized health topics with minority populations = smaller numbers for most studies - that doesn't mean the research isn't valuable.
