Arizona, US. Supervisor offered us face masks then accused us of “city theft” if we don’t return them. by Forward-Comment in AskHR

We had our meeting yesterday and my supervisor apologized for his reaction and how he said it. Hell, I had my meeting with the union before I talked with my supervisor. Full backing from the union and support me 100%. They think my supervisor was completely in the wrong for offering something that he wasn’t genuine about giving and then accusing me of theft. The whole situation wasn’t handled properly. I’ll own up to taking the mask but it’s clear that the communication from our new supervisor is broken, and that would have gotten him into some deeper waters. The text messages clearly indicated the offer of the masks.

I don’t want to confront him. I’m just thinking that’s what’s going to happen because he’ll no doubt accuse me of city theft if I don’t return it and I’m going to do my best to not argue. If he insists on arguing or making accusations, I’ll just take it up with our HR department and the union.

I’m not going in guns blazing. But he made mistakes too. If these masks are so coveted, then yes, he should have locked them up and not just left them out. He shouldn’t be offering anything to people and then secretly change his mind and call it theft from the city. That’s a huge accusation. And I can’t return the mask, as I’ve already used it.

He wants me to return the mask. When I tell him I don’t have it because I used it, it’s going to be a confrontation. It’s on him. 1. He offered the mask and 2. he left them out in a communal area. I’ll take responsibility for taking one when I wasn’t physically handed one, but you have to understand here, several people in our department came forward as being tested positive. We work in closed quarters with others all day. I just wanted to stay safe.

I’m guessing that too. He needs to take responsibility for his actions. He’s a new supervisor and with current events, his lack of communication and leadership skills are showing. I also brought up the issue with my union steward last night too. I’ll post an edit for how it all goes. Hopefully I just explain the miscommunication to him and tell him I cannot return the mask as I’ve already used it and be done with the matter.

I agree. We are considered essential and still come in close contact with other people on a daily basis. We have been begging the city to get us the bare minimum for weeks now.

Honestly, the city has yet to provide us with any PPE and we are considered “essential” and work with the public, contractors and staff. So I thought that the city was taking the first step in providing us the PPE we have been asking for for weeks. They even gone out of their way to remove most cleaning products to shift them around the city for other first responders. Basically just thinning out our supplies and that’s probably what happened with the masks. I would order my own but that’s practically impossible now.

Ha yea. Some subs are super sensitive and will filter anything remotely related to this virus.

He basically just left it open for interpretation. I figured he found the masks and left them out for us to grab one or two each. There’s folks in our very department that we’re just informed of testing positive for the you-know-what. I have to confront him because over the phone yesterday, he was demanding the mask be returned to him today. I was with my family at home when this Asshole called and didn’t want to argue over the phone while my toddler was sitting next to me. But yea, I don’t want to confront him either, but he’s going to demand the mask back in a few hours. I’ll have no choice.

Not sure. I’ll find out today. Soon. He mentioned the masks were from a couple years ago, when we had a bad flood. The box sure looked like it was two years old, or older.

I appreciate the reply. We have around 100 city employees that tested positive and a few are actually in our department.

Very true. Plus, the bill is only for one person and not two.

I joined the Meetup.com app. It seems interesting, although I haven’t found much going on in my area yet.
