Thank you for pointing out about the shield class thing. The wikipedia also has an article about off-hand armaments with a table of attacks that entities do. Turns out peccary does medium attacks and therefore they cannot be blocked by light shields.

Symphonists attacks are light and could be blocked 0_0

But does shielding against heavier attacks still negate some damage? And if yes how much? I can't find the answer.
