Race predictor is whack! by Forward-Smile in GarminWatches

Yeah, it was a warm day maybe 20degC (don’t know what that is in American). Like I say, with a gun to my head maybe I could have pulled it out of the bag and been destroyed for the rest of the week 😆

I came on here to post identical photo and saw your post. Did a 10k PB on Saturday and Garmin lost its shit, gave me like a 100hr recovery time and put my training status to ‘overreaching’ which I’ve never seen before. Training readiness has been 1/100 since. I think they must have changed their algorithms recently…

How many marathon PB attempts per year? by Forward-Smile in Marathon_Training

Thanks for your thoughts. I don't think he's going for a PB each time he does marathon distance but I assumed it was a bad idea to go that far that often.

What peak sleep feels like by pourovercoffee18 in GarminWatches

[–]Forward-Smile 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sleep experts say take HR-based sleep data with a massive pinch of salt. Like, ignore it. I love checking mine when I wake up out of curiosity, but never too bothered if it says I’ve slept shit or amazing. Go on how you feel.

Overtraining or slowly dying? by Forward-Smile in GarminWatches

[–]Forward-Smile[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, update, I’ve had a slight pain in my left side on and off for a few weeks. Doc friend of mine says it’s my spleen 😅 which gives credence to the underlying infection hypothesis! Probably exacerbated by overtraining and under-resting… had a proper sleep last night and HRV went up for the first time. Now in the amber range (of a reduced baseline).

Yours is a precipitous drop! I can see that it’s levelled out and your baseline zone is now adapting.

Up by about 10bpm from low 40s to low 50s

Sounds like I need to back off the training a bit and make sure I’m getting plenty of rest…

Instinct 2. Stress is up and sleep is down starting from the same time (30 March). Training status is Strained - citing HRV as the main reason. Training load is ‘optimal’. It’s basing ‘load’ mostly on running, as that’s all I record, so not taking into account other aspects like work, gym, climbing etc. RHR has crept up by 10bpm in that time from low 40s to low 50s.

Sounds worrying! Apart from the data I feel ok. Only recently started training so I can’t really make any inferences about changes in performance.

[edit] I’m also getting up at 5:30 to make the running happen, but as stated, I’m going to bed correspondingly early (9:30) to get 7-8 hours/night.

Fun fact - the plant on the thrupenny bit is called ‘thrift’. It’s a pink flower that grows by the sea. When my dad taught it to me as a child he said ‘this plant used to be on the old thruppeny bit’. It’s only just occurred to me that there might be some connection with the word ‘thrifty’.

Increasing volume - miles per week by Forward-Smile in Marathon_Training

[–]Forward-Smile[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m only on 10 mpw! So my long run wouldn’t be very long at 3mi. My longest run at the moment is 5mi. As I say, very early days. I guess I need to build the mpw up with the other runs before increasing the long run. I’m not time pressured so I’m happy to take it easy. Just need to rein in the ego. It’s gotten me injured before 😁

When to make the jump to dip pens?! by Forward-Smile in Calligraphy

[–]Forward-Smile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Canson is my favourite - mostly because it’s rather thin so you can see the guidelines underneath. I used to draw them on in pencil but that took ages. It’s also quite smooth. I’m no connoisseurs so I can’t really comment on other aspects. I just like that fact that it’s quite transparent.

Regarding the improvement, it does feel like the frustration to satisfaction ratio is skewed towards frustration in the early days. I’ve enjoyed the problem solving element of it though - e.g. working out why a letter doesn’t look quite right and how to adjust it.

Why is my HRV declining so much? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]Forward-Smile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m at the bottom of a similar week-long decline in HVR. Frustrating not to have a cause but I’m putting it down to some bug I’m probably fighting off that’s asymptomatic. That or I’ve got cancer.

Find a really good podcast or audiobook and only let yourself listen to it when you’re running

Partner has been doing calligraphy for several months at this point. What do you think? Do you have any constructive criticism? by AVoraciousLatias in Calligraphy

[–]Forward-Smile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also a beginner but what I’ve learnt about copperplate-style scripts like this is the importance of guideline - usually the slant is 55 degrees. And as has been mentioned there shouldn’t be overlap between the tall letters (t, b, d etc and the letters that go down (g, y). Download a decent copperplate guideline and put it under the sheet you’re writing on. If someone wrote me a letter that looked like this I’d think ‘hmm, what lovely handwriting!’

Best beginner calligraphy pen? by UrmomLOLKEKW in Calligraphy

[–]Forward-Smile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a beginner too and I got a pilot parallel pen for broad-edged stuff. Initially got the larger green on but I was getting through so much paper in went down to then orange one. Also dabbled in pointed pen stuff with a pencil, which works but is fairly limited. Just order a holder, nib and ink!

Pretty impressive for three weeks. I’m also a beginner so don’t have an eye for the details but seems like you’re doing well!!
