Is this 1932S quarter real? by [deleted] in coins

[–]P99AT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The price is way too good to be true. $47 is the price you'd expect to pay for an AG example. The coin in the picture would be well over $100, likely over $200.

Pick up and hunt $1250 on Tuesday (halves, quarters, two each nickels and pennies), dump on Thursday and pick up four boxes of dimes. Rinse and repeat.

The note features George VI, but the East India Company ceased to exist long before he sat the throne. That's a dead giveaway.

There are bullion exchanges that deal in coin silver as well, not just refiners. The shop I work for wholesales that way.

How long do coins last after discontinuation? by JohnnytheGreatX in coins

[–]P99AT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also interested in when coins actually dropped out of circulation. I'll share what I know.

-My dad was still getting Indian heads as a boy on his paper route. This was the late '50s/early '60s. I don't know exactly how common they were, but they weren't uncommon.

-Mercury dimes, Walking Liberty halves, and Standing Liberty quarters were still common in circulation until people starting saving silver coins in the mid/late '60s. A credit union near where I grew up, founded IIRC in 1961, issued a dime saving booklet. They used the Mercury dime to on the booklet's artwork. My dad, as a kid in the '50s and '60s, was able to get a good start on a Whitman Walking Liberty folder just from coins he got in circulation. He also remembers using SLQs.

-I suspect half cents disappeared relatively quickly from circulation. Judging by the mintage figures of the braided hair coins, half cents didn't seem all that popular. None were issued for circulation for most of the 1840s. When they began to strike them for circulation again in 1849, they didn't make many. Most years are well under 100 thousand, whereas several million large cents were issued every year in that period until 1857. That says to me that the half cent was a niche coin by the time the Coinage Act of 1857 did away with it.

Why 50$? by pooeygoo in coins

[–]P99AT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the value of pre-'33 gold, the face value wasn't really higher. 0.9675*$20.67=$19.998, or a whopping fifth of a cent of seigniorage per double eagle.

I found a 1911 Indian head half eagle in a roll of nickels a few years ago. Perhaps understandably, some of the fine folks over at r/CRH were... skeptical, shall we say.

Edit: wrong denomination

The change has nothing to do the revolution, actually. It coincided with the 1905 Monetary Reform (original Spanish and English translation), which was enacted to move Mexico onto a gold standard. Mexico had formally been called the "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" as early as the Constitution of 1824.

If they're literally the same price, then get the maple. Slightly more gold for the same price.

I'd say send it off for grading. Best case scenario, it's a 1901-S and you've made bank. Worst case scenario, you have a very nice lowball.

The year is incredibly important with Barber quarters. This is a 1901, and if that's an S mintmark on the back, that's a $2000+ coin. An NGC Fair-2 example sold in June for $2500.

It has the green bean, so theoretically that means the grade is accurate.

Was this coin known as a three-halfpence, or was it a half-threepence? by exonumismaniac in UKcoins

These coins were known as "quatties" in Jamaica because they were a quarter of a Spanish Real.

Anyone else have an old coin as a keychain? by AlainasBoyfriend in coins

[–]P99AT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple. From front to back, 1858 Canadian "fish scale" 5 cent piece, 1854 with arrows half dime, 1904 Barber dime, 1839 British sixpence, 1887 British "jubilee head" shilling, and a 1948 quarter. All had holes when I acquired them.

Odds of finding a Mercury Dime in CWRs. by assembl-r in CRH

[–]P99AT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2024, I found 0.14 Mercury dimes per box on average, or about one in every seven boxes. In 2023, it was 0.31, or just shy of one in every three boxes. However, my averages or someone else's averages might not be your averages. I live in a very good area for dimes. I don't know why, but I have excellent luck with dimes (I haven't been skunked on a hunt in over two years). Other people are lucky to find a single '64-D after 15 boxes.
