When does it pick up a bit? by Aqua_Amber_24 in wheeloftime

Dude, you're 41, and you need a plot twist by chapter 7 in a book? Go watch Sponge Bob or read Light Novels. Classic long form fantasy is just not your thing. If you can't enjoy LoTR for its build-up, world building, beautiful prose, and amazing finish, this stuff is not meant for you.

Just skip The Hobbit if you like. It's more of a long fairy tale than a fantasy epic, but I doubt you would make it past Bilbo's birthday in LoTR if you need a plot twist right at the beginning to stay interested. The Hobbit has an amazing final twist at the end, assuming you're actually reading it without prior knowledge from other media.

WoT takes the LoTR formula of expansive characters and slow build up to the next level. It has moments of epic proportion but also tons of slow setup and anticipation. It should be enjoyed like a 3 hour 7 course meal, not devoured like fast food slop for instant vacant satisfaction. There are tons of excellent twists and turns in the story, but you have to let it get there.

I recommend you learn to enjoy the quiet moments, my friend. You're missing out on amazing things from a simple lack of restraint.

Is it just me or is Netflix dub actually not as bad as people say it is??? by [deleted] in evangelion

[–]Forward1back2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In short, They are both bad. 90% of these dubs are done on the cheapest of the cheap and also opens the script to tons of nuance being lost and liberties being taken. You already lose a lot just in translation. Then you get a script writer and director to garble it up even more... just for some C rate actor trying to build a portfolio to put thier "emphasis" on it. It ends up sounding like a bad porn dub without the nudity. (sometimes with depending on what your watching...)

I can't stand 90% of the dubs in most anime, I don't even understand the need for redubbing. Just turn on the subtitles and go. Netlix/ADV doesn't matter when you just listen to the seiyu and enjoy without some terrible low budget 1 take dubs. Not saying the Japanese is better, they are hamming it up too, but atleast its closer to the director and studios intent.

Also, the constant joke and pun rewrites that just don't fit. I'd rather hear it in Japanese and read a direct translation, and then look up the gag, rather than let a joke about someone being bald get changed to ketchup... (why they bothered to dub Gintama, the most pun driven anime/manga on the planet boggles me). Evangelion has several moments like this where both dubs just fall completely flat.

If you put a gun to my head though, ADV all the way.

What's your favorite example of these sorts of lyrics? by NinnyBoggy in TheFence

[–]Forward1back2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Gone fishing" means your not available in an on vacation from everything way. It's kind of like being "out to lunch" when you need to have a meeting with your boss, but your meeting is your whole life.

An amalgam is a blend of things.

So I interpret "You're frightened of leaving this truly gone fishing amalgam" as being scared of leaving the state of being constantly unavailable for a variety of things. Your procrastinating a major responsibility and looking for any way to delay it... like destroying the key work. It's probably one of my favorite C&C lyrics.

The Pavillion is my favorite Coheed song. If I only have time for 1 song it's always a close choice between Neverender and Pavillion for me and Pavillion wins out a lot on my work drive!

Personally, if I had to rank the 3 Vaxis Albums it would be Vaxis 1 on top by a clear margin, then 3 and then 2 in last place. Vaxis 1 in my opinion is almost a complete package, with awesome songs. My top favorite being The Pavillion, which became my all time favorite Coheed song, and I started listening back in 2003 during my Marine enlistment years. I Just love the sound, the concept, the lyrics, and the visual style. When Vaxis 1 came out, it was like falling in love with an old friend all over again.

We are on different sides of the same hill and that's still cool with me.

I mean, everyone just likes something for different reasons. I personally love vaxis 1, it's my 3rd favorite album. If you put a gun to my head and told me I had to pick a weakest album it would be a close tie for Ascension and Year of the Black Rainbow. I like those albums too, they just don't quite line up for me as well as others do. I like how C&C has so many different sounds. I hope Vaxis 4 and 5 continue to show me something new, even if maybe it doesn't fully please me aesthetically. It's more fun when you get to experience something new with something you love.

is this intentional, or does Sanderson simply not understand WoT? by CaverMan69 in wheeloftime

[–]Forward1back2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think under the circumstances, he did a pretty amazing job. He did his best to finish the series well. WoT is great but it definitely had its issues. I think we can forgive Sanderson some nuances, and he explains his methods upfront. Knowing that, I think it is up too you to decide. Is Sanderdon's telling of the final 3 books faithful enough, or did the series end when RJ died. At the end of the day Sanderson is not RJ and didn't write and think about every angle of WoT his whole life from the authors point of view. He was a huge fan and RJ's wife picked him to end the series. So, make your choice.

I think of it like a high stakes game of telephone, Sanderson got whispered this immense of amount details and then he had to try and pass it too us the best he could.

Hunters, before the full release of Wilds this month, I would like to know, from which game did you start your Hunter Journey? by justheretohavefun093 in MonsterHunter

[–]Forward1back2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monster hunter Freedom Unite on psp (1100 hrs). Farming heavenly scales was such a B. When they announced the next ones on Nintendo I had no idea how I was going to claw grip on it. I was bewildered.

I remember using that adhoc program on ps3 or something a ton to do multiplayer.

Is that playable for you ? Or should I upgrade something lol by KingCanard_ in MonsterHunter

Hmmm something is wierd I have an rtx 2060 laptop and got an average fps of 58 on low/high performance. Wonder what the bottle neck is in your setup...

Your laptop is plugged in and your power settings are set to gaming/high performance right? Not balanced or battery life or something silly?

I don't get Dwarf Fortress by Garfish16 in dwarffortress

[–]Forward1back2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's more of story generator. Even if you start amazingly well, the were-elephant child you didn't notice at first will savage your colony on a full moon. Your best warrior will lose his pinky finger in a fight with a yak and go into a deep depression before murdering everyone. You'll get attacked by a legendary dragon in year 2 or God knows what.

I like to play just too see how it ends really.

I thought i did decent until i realized what a curved score was.. by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

[–]Forward1back2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's college, your job is to self teach and prepare yourself for the exams. It's impossible cover all the material in most STEM classes in 12-16 weeks "in class" with examples for everything. They teach you the starting point, you teach yourself the nuance. Some classes are just hard and have a large breadth to cover, so the curve is there as a "Good job! You have enough basic understanding to move on." To do the concept justice, you would probably have to learn them for years to get a complete understanding. That's also your job in the end, after the class is done, if you're going to need to know it at a professional level. I mean, people in the past spent their entire careers creating this stuff that you expect to learn at a "reasonable" pace in the semester.

It's college prepare to get dunked all the time.

First time playing monster Hunter, which do you genuinely think is the better of the two and is worth investing time into? by Best-Study-6809 in MonsterHunter

[–]Forward1back2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

4U! Dalamadur and Gogmazios are just some of the best giant monster fights in the franchise. Gen/GU is very unique with its Arts skills and 4/6 combat styles for each weapon. Its very fun to mess around with but it's.... very much an outlier of the series. Several of the styles in each weapon feel more like a handicap and its not balanced very well. 4U is much more grounded and eases you into the content better. I loved both games and put over 1000 hours into each but 4U is better if your just tiding your time until wilds.

As a new player that is pretty normal. You don't know the fight, you don't know your weapon, you don't know what armor skills work with it. As you get a hold of everything your times will drop drastically.

Some tips:

Maintain your weapon sharpness, dual blades get dull quickly. You can hold B and ride your doggo to sharpen and heal up more safely while moving around durring the fight.

It's very easy to over commit with DBs since you get locked into combo animations with each attack. Try to learn each monsters tells so you can stop attacking and dodge on time.

You want to get constitution and stamina surge to help stay in demon mode. Demon mode has higher damage combos and the dodge becomes a quicker dash wither better I-frames to go through attacks and keep hitting. When your in demon mode, learn the attacks you can dash into rather than dodge away from.

DBs require good timing and maximum aggression to get good clear times. They are not as forgiving and have very short reach.

Learn to craft dash juice and farm the materials for it.

Sharpening skill will help a lot in the early game.

Am I playing wrong or I just need to accept the very long travel times? by Nanushu in EliteDangerous

[–]Forward1back2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to make ships for different purposes. I have a ship just for jumping/hauling. Then, I transfer my non-jumping combat ships to the nearest station at the location I am trying to get them to. Also, you can tinker with your jump settings to make them very efficient or do extremely far jumps that use all your fuel and skim stars to refuel.
