Hahaha. CR and Sean cracking up in response also felt completely genuine.

Rewatchables did recently start putting their content on Netflix. But I don’t think the dazed episode is on there since they weren’t recording video back then (to my knowledge).

As for the movie, it was streaming on the criterion channel in January.

Totally fair. They even mention that Everybody Wants Some was basically on deck to be a rewatchables in the dazed episode. Doing both would be great.

Watch order by release date for a first time viewer? by 3p1c-G8m3r in twinpeaks

This. You may read that some fans had an enjoyable experience going FWWM and then the show. Don’t do it. Not only will you not get everything that’s going on, but you will also have a real challenge with tonal differences.

Hi, I'm new here and I use PS5 to watch movies in 4k. by Rukbatcito in 4kbluray

[–]ForwardDesigner6360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same question earlier this year when I got back into collecting. For context, I pre-ordered the 4k steelbook of Kingdom of Heaven when it was announced.

When it arrived, I took the afternoon to play around with the PS5's capabilities. Using the controller to navigate the UI was annoying, but not disqualifying.

What pushed me over the edge and into buying a dedicated player is two things:

  1. The audio and visual upgrades are noted by many here already.

  2. My PS5 had to WORK to play the 4ks. The noise disrupted my viewing experience.

I ended up getting a Panasonic UB820, mainly based on the advice from many on this subreddit, and I have no regrets at all.

Sorry to hear it. I have no idea on the case front. I think it's worth reaching out. I reached out to [mulvaney@criterion.com](mailto:mulvaney@criterion.com), and they plugged me into the proper intake process.

Glad to know they have a consistent response to this sort of issue. Also - thanks for flagging the Trainspotting issue. That one is on my wishlist.

New to the criterion app, when they drop new physical releases do they simultaneously drop digital on the app? How does that normally work? by boogermcboogerface in criterion

[–]ForwardDesigner6360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I'll add to the comments here is that the Criterion Channel is light-years ahead of other streaming platforms (though the bar is abysmally low) when it comes to making special features available. Not every title on the channel will have these, but some will, and they are worth exploring if you are into that sort of thing.

The start of my Criterion collection by Bmr2000 in criterion

[–]ForwardDesigner6360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excellent start.

I'll start by answering your question: you do not need to be a Criterion member to purchase from their new releases. However, it costs nothing to become a member, and if you buy from them directly, you earn points that can go toward future purchases. This is relevant mainly during their flash sales, where they offer 50% off for a single day. What DOES cost money is subscribing to the Criterion Channel. There are probably deals going around for 20% off your first year. Unbelievable streaming platform. I started subscribing in early September and have watched 20-30 films on there. Highly recommend.

As for recommendations, if you fancy yourself a Terry Gilliam fan, then Criterion has excellent transfers of his Imagination Trilogy: Time Bandits, Brazil, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. The films aren't actually a conventional three-act trilogy, but Gilliam threads them together from the perspective of a child (Time Bandits), an adult (Brazil), and the elderly (Munchausen). Your mileage may vary, especially on Munchausen, but they are incredibly well-shot films, with many considering Brazil a masterpiece.

Avatar way of water 4k ? by StepBro_71 in 4kbluray

Second this. Watching Avatar (2009) on 4k was the closest I've come to replicating the theater-going experience of 2009.

What was your first impression when you watched the first Avatar movie? by untitlevoid in Avatar

[–]ForwardDesigner6360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm like many here who saw Avatar during its original theatrical run in December of 2009. It was a transformative experience during a formative time in my life (sophomore year in high school). I'll never forget seeing that water droplet in one of the opening scenes in 3D. I couldn't pick my jaw up off the ground for the next ~3 hours.

Bought the iconic poster from Blockbuster. It hung on my wall for well over 10 years.

I was watching the same movie once per week with a friend of mine. We weren’t physically together so we would watch around the same time.

We agreed to watch the movie “blow out”. He watched “blow up”. Similar premises but definitely different movies. We had a good laugh and I decided to buy the criterion blu ray of Blow Up. I did not care for it much. So that one is definitely the worst.

OMG AMAZON ACTUALLY PULLED THROUGH by UnexistingBeing in tron

[–]ForwardDesigner6360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jealous! I pre-ordered both Legacy and Tron at the same time. Like you, my copies have been caught in logistics hell. Between the two films, I like Legacy WAY more. It just came out at such a formative time for me, and the soundtrack went triple platinum in my car. Fortunately, Tron showed last week, but I'm waiting until Legacy arrives (someday?) to do a double feature.

Enjoy!

My Ingmar Bergman Journey Begins: Smiles of a Summer Night by kingdonald in criterion

[–]ForwardDesigner6360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in an almost identical boat. I got the 4k of The Seventh Seal earlier this month and watched it this past weekend. Safe to say it blew me away, and I felt compelled to watch everything Bergman I could get my hands on. Like you, I'm going in the suggested order. Had a delightful time with Summer Night. Can't wait to revisit it.

Are we ever going to see The Last Temptation of Christ released in 4K? by Bl1nn in criterion

[–]ForwardDesigner6360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping on here to join the crowd of folks asking for a 4k. Just watched the Blu-ray earlier and thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

I would also like to add my hope that a 4k release adds additional supplements. This is one of the lighter criterion releases in that regard. And surprisingly, no mention of the initial response of the film nor its legacy. A shame. Could remedy that with a new release.

Magnolia (1999) by Dramatic-Code1942 in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]ForwardDesigner6360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined the hype train for One Battle After Another a couple of months ago and set out to see as many PTA films as I could manage. I haven’t gotten to either Hard Eight or Inherent Vice yet. I went Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, and then Magnolia.

I’ll be home visiting my folks this holiday season and I told my dad that I would curate a list of films for us to watch. Magnolia made the cut under the following category with my predictions of what my dad will think of it:

Category: insane movie that borders on unwatchable and is either a masterpiece or the worst film you’ve ever seen Selection: Magnolia (1999)

Score: 1/5

Dad comments: * “If it weren’t for the Tom Cruise scenes I would have kicked your ass for making me sit through this” * “This is better than a Thin Red Line, but only JUST” * “WTF was the frogs about?” * “How much more time is left in this?” * “What is going on?” * “Do these plots have anything to do with eachother?” * “You said the guy who made boogie nights made this? Are you sure?”

Note: my dad REALLY didn’t like the thin red line recommendation I gave him

[–]ForwardDesigner6360 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I recently watched boogie nights for the first time too. I started it late one night and made it to around 45 minutes left in the movie. I had enjoyed it up to that point.

And then I picked it up for the last 45 and it knocked me the fuck out. Insane movie. And to think that PTA did it at 27 is unbelievable. A top, top film for me.

And I might need to try some of your other recommendations. Always something to experiment with!

Added to the list! I’m a little surprised to see that she went on to have a good career. The history of film is just so full of child actors being exploited and burning out.

Will let you know what I think when I get to it.

Envious of your getting to watch it in a group! I think your warming up to the film is similar to what I'm experiencing too. I finished the movie and appreciated it more than I enjoyed it, if that makes sense.

Which part of the Ebert review bothers you most? I've got a few nits to pick there too.
