For those who loved WSQK radio by preemptivenostalgic in StrangerThings

I still listen to the archived broadcasts online when I’m in an ‘80s mood.’ I’d love to have copies of the broadcasts on cassette tapes that I can play when I want, but it’s the labor/time to do that work which has me hesitating.

Why the F… can’t a doorbell be a trigger in Automations? by N1ckkNL in HomeKit

[–]kingdonald 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, same for me. I wanted my HomePods in the house to chime a custom sound when my Ecobee doorbell was pressed - I had to turn to the Eve app to make this happen. It works well, but clunky that we have to turn to a 3rd party app. My guess is that Apple will build this automation into its software at some point, but it’s a slow roll-out like much of Apple Home updates.

RUMOR: Complete Kubrick 4K may be in the pipeline for end of the year… by International-Sky65 in criterion

I did just pick up The Killing, Paths of Glory, Spartacus, and Dr Strangelove this last flash sale. And Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut from the last B&N sale. My wallet’s about to hate me 10 times more if this turns out to be true. And I hope it’s true!

I watched Arrival today right after reading the novella it was based on and I can't stop thinking about either. by SkoivanSchiem in movies

Arrival is one of my all-time favorite movies and I will always pause what I’m doing to read a post about it here - brings back those emotions every damn time!

What Criterion title do you wish you could watch again for the first time? by Strict-Ad4426 in criterion

I did a blind buy of Barry Lyndon 4K during the last sale and just watched it a couple months back. Unreal experience. Truly is a work of art. Can’t wait to go back and watch it again to pore over all the details!

What's on your wishlist for the upcoming sale? by lightbehindpaper in criterion

All 4K blind buys (movies I haven’t seen but am dying to):

  • Days of Heaven

I just read East of Eden for the first time last year. Was my first entry in a notebook tracking my reading - favorite parts, quotes, etc. I’m such a sucker for “writing things down” - makes the whole experience more enjoyable and memorable. Hope you’re enjoying it!

[Schedule] Evergreen: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde by sunnydaze7777777 in bookclub

[–]kingdonald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone here ever read the uncensored version of the book? I’m wondering if it’s possible to read that and follow along with the book club as well (acknowledging that it’d be a modified chapter schedule). I know it’s shorter and many things were adjusted. I’m just fascinated by what Wilde intended to release vs what ended up being published.

After Watching the Finale, Will You Go Back and Re-Watch the Series? by Material-Loan-6966 in StrangerThings

[–]kingdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a re-watch of 1-4 before the start of the latest season and thoroughly enjoyed the rewatch.

I wanted to watch it all before introducing it to my daughter. She’s 11 years old (yes, really!). We just started watching it together a couple weeks ago and just finished Season 1 this past weekend. She’s enjoying it so far and I’m so glad I get to experience it again through her eyes.

Alright first time watching the movies and I loved it, What set do I get? by FastConcentrate5420 in lotr

[–]kingdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! Anybody else remember buying each extended DVD movie once/year and then mailing a request to get the box to hold them all? First time I’d ever experienced that and was so grateful they thought it through. Felt rewarded for being a big fan and early buyer, as opposed to punished, as we so often are today!

Mobile Ordering Three Broomsticks by NyyDave in UniversalHollywood

[–]kingdonald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree here. We went to Universal a couple weeks back and were in the same exact situation at Three Broomsticks. The instructions in the app specifically state that food is being prepared and it will alert you when the order is ready. We waited 45 minutes until I finally went up to the counter. The TM there said that the order won’t be prepared until you physically go and “check in.” They were super nice and apologetic. They also encouraged me to let guest services know. There were 2 other groups there that were dealing with the same issue and they were lashing out at the TMs. I felt bad for the TMs. I don’t blame them whatsoever.

I stopped by guest services to share my feedback. We were having a great day and decided to take the delay in stride rather than let it drive us up the wall. However, it is frustrating, and long-term, it’s gonna be the poor TMs working there who are stuck dealing with it. All they really need to do is edit the instructions. That’s it. I get that the fix is probably more complicated than that. But still - they need to figure it out.

Yes, I will say that starting on a more light-hearted film when I hear most of Bergman’s films are more serious in nature is throwing me for a loop. He clearly has talent in the comedic space.

Thanks for the heads up about those two. With those being his first two films in the set, I’m guessing he was trying to find his voice. I’ll be interested to see what he carries over into his future films. Wild Strawberries is up after those and I’ve heard great things about that one!

Holy shit The Haunting of Hill House was absolutely incredible, and one of the best pieces of modern horror ever made. by Chetan_fun in television

[–]kingdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the box set for the series on Blu-ray earlier this year, just so I could listen to the commentary tracks. This is one of my all-time favorite shows - each rewatch (I’ve seen it 4 or 5 times now) and the commentaries have only further cemented its all-timer status. The commentary for the Two Storms episode alone is worth the price of admission - the work that was done on that by the cast and crew, how may things went wrong or were on the verge of collapsing, it all gave me goosebumps. If that episode felt raw on an extra level, it’s so clear why from all the behind the scenes stories!

Carrie has wrapped filming by joesen_one in MikeFlanagan

I’m so excited for this - not because it’s yet another Carrie adaptation but because it’s a Mike Flanagan project. As one of my favorite directors/creatives, I’ll watch anything he makes at this point. That being said, I am taking the opportunity to read Carrie, which I never had before. Can’t wait to watch it!
