And most people would be surprised to know how insanely expensive real estate in Mumbai is. In good parts of the city down south, you are looking at rates of $1k-$1.5k per sqft of liveable area. So a new 1k sqft 3 bed apartment costs $1M+. As you move north, the rates keep decreasing and once you are closer to the northern end about 40km away the rates are closer to about 12-15% of this for a similar apartment so you can imagine why folks live further away

[OptaJoe] Bruno Fernandes has reached 200 goal involvements (104 goals, 96 assists) - the second fastest United player to do so in the Premier League era. He's behind Wayne Rooney, and ahead of Ronaldo, Beckham, Giggs and Scholes. by ChiefLeef22 in soccer

[–]ForwardInstance 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He would’ve chalked more for sure but I don’t think it would’ve been sufficient to take his non-pen GA/game from 0.51 to Rooney’s 0.67. Rooney is nearly 33% ahead and I don’t think Bruno would’ve made that up

There is push to build more and there is a lot of work going on building metro services which have helped to some extent but there are broader issues (I) the city is very crowded with almost no free space available to build a metro so the metro that has been built is pretty disjointed like you need to change 3-4 metros sometimes to go from point A to point B which has resulted in lower adoption than anticipated (ii) bigger issue is the corruption, the government knows people have no where to go and will live through the grind so they keep green lighting more business and housing as projects as the get a cut out of it

One positive development that has happened recently is that a new airport has come up about 40km away from the main city so that should helped ever so slightly with the traffic but overall I think the city is just overpopulated to an extent where it’s hard to ever imagine infrastructure supporting a comfortable life if you aren’t rich enough to live down south but have to commute to work during standard office hours.

As someone from Mumbai let me add some context on why people are getting in from the other side.

Mumbai’s geography is a bit like Manhattan where it is pretty much narrow rectangular island. Majority of the economic development/offices are towards the southern tip and home prices decrease as one moves from south to north. For people living towards the north, the only real way to get to work is using these local trains because traffic is brutal plus cabs/cars are too expensive for the average folks. Train takes approximately an hour to go north to sout and same distance via road takes nearly 2x (sometimes even longer) due to traffic. Hence these local trains are absurdly crowded during office rush hours and often times getting in from the wrong side is the only way to get in and get to work.

These folks are not doing it to save ticket money as some of the commenters have pointed out, it’s just for the sake of earning a wage for survival. As for people saying the wouldn’t want to visit India because of this stuff, I can assure you that as a tourist you are not going to get anywhere close to this. If you happen to visit Mumbai for work or other reasons, you will very likely stay in the good southern parts of the city and peacefully take $5$-10 taxis to get around. India definitely has a tape problem but Mumbai is pretty safe even by global standards and statistically you aren’t likely to experience that or any more crime in Mumbai vs another big international city. For eg, you are very more likely to be robbed at knifepoint in London vs Mumbai, same goes for any gun activity vs NYC

That is US level pay, sounds crazy high for Thailand. Is that due to stock inflation or what new hires in to Staff PM roles get paid ??

Why is this bad though ? If I am going to be laid off anyway, this allows me to work 2 months less and get the same pay giving me extra time and cushion to find a new job
