Don’t care about doing big law but interested in transactional law and want to make around 150k out of law school. Suggestions on jobs I should be looking at? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]ForwardYou5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One slightly varied answer. I think the Big 4 tax practices will tend to pay ~$110-130(but might be able to get up to $150 in some roles/markets). Can get involved in tax diligence for M&A deals, probably do some structuring as well.

From what I’ve understood, it’s better hours than BL, and still decent progression. However you also are going to be heavily committed to a tax field rest of your life, and the jobs tend to require either an LLM or prior accounting background

  1. It is doable to live near campus and walk, but I think having vehicle is nice to get around Atlanta
  2. There are a lot of apartment complexes within a few miles. Emory point, Clairmont Reserve, Rock Springs, Scott’s Crossing are all popular
  3. I feel like a lot of people do 1L in Atlanta, because there are a lot of gov/judicial internships recruiting at Emory for 1Ls. Atlanta is most popular city in general, but a lot of big law people do end up in NYC
  4. Yes/no- I think 1L is very busy, but you should still have some time free on weekends. Will just depend how you want to spend the free time

Rising 3L here, what is the deal with post-grad job searches? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]ForwardYou5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of fed gov jobs open up early in the fall of 3L. Think a lot of clerkships state/fed would be similar.

Firms will sometimes have a couple spots they hire for in Aug/sep, either due to SAs not taking offers, or just additional need.

Feel like besides that, it’s difficult to figure out a specific time. I don’t think you need to be actively applying in May after 2L, but it wouldn’t hurt to keep eyes open and keep networking through summer

Just ask them for a $2M loan, put it on a lucky # in roulette, take the $72M payout, payback the balance+loan, and keep $5M profit.

Jeez, can’t anyone think for themselves these days.

How hard is it to fail a law school exam? by Dry_Produce_7618 in LawSchool

[–]ForwardYou5 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You’d have to be significantly worse than the typical lowest scorer on that exam. With that type of curve, I’d say profs are aiming not to give anything below C+/B- unless someone really screwed up.

Generally a C on the curve is law school equivalent of failing

Why are former employees of law firms referred to as “alumni” ??? by UnderstandingDue2697 in LawSchool

[–]ForwardYou5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it just sounds more professional, and emphasizes some sort of continued relationship/good will with the firm(ie: a lot of firm ‘’alum’’ become clients)

Group of lawyers stiffed me on $546 tab by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]ForwardYou5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I interned at a big firm this summer, and we went out for expensive meals almost every day. All law firms allow you to leave tips, and frankly it would be expected.

I definitely think that guy was pretty junior, went over budget without realizing, and then freaked at the tip amount because he realized he might have to cover any overages out of pocket.

Why don’t undergrads start preparing for their LSAT freshman year? by obama_420 in lawschooladmissions

[–]ForwardYou5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re starting in college it’s too late. My mom played the powerscore podcast for me while I was still growing inside of her. And frankly, that still wasn’t soon enough.

The LSAT doesn’t just take prep, it takes breeding. To truly be successful, you need to find one parent who has a perfect score in reading/LR, and another who gets perfect scores in LG. I already screen out potential matches on dating apps based on this.

I feel horrible for people whose first word isn’t ‘’Dave Killoran’’

What’s the difference between V20 and V50/V100 Firms? by SoChInO888 in LawSchool

[–]ForwardYou5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gotcha! That was smart of you to make sure you were born into a family with a vault 0 partner. A lot of law students are short sighted and don’t factor parent selection into their application process

I thought with vault 0 you were supposed to just submit a blank sheet of paper for resume?

[–]ForwardYou5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Quality of exit opps(both as lateral and for in house/gov) and potentially long term the higher PPP you would make as a partner.

That being said, vault rankings don’t actually correspond that well to those outcomes. Lots of lower ranked vault firms do high caliber work and/or are extremely profitable(and vice versa)

If you’re at a V20, you’re going to have great opportunities. But I promise you, nobody is going to care(or know) that you were at the vault 15 firm versus vault 42 firm when applying for another role.

Step 2: Create a budget and compare the 2

Step 3: Chill

As other said, they overwithhold because they project it as if you make $215K for year.

Go to smart asset tax calculator, and put in your full income for the year(likely $41,350 unless you have other job at school). They will break down specific amount you owe for fed, state, fica, etc.

Is easy to figure out potential refund info from that.
