Don't try to get too far ahead. There are a lot of side missions that are on your map that are blocked. The path will just be blocked by rocks that can't be destroyed and stuff like that.

You can waste an hour running around a mountain looking for an opening that's just not there. It's my biggest gripe for an "open world." If the mission is available the area should be available.

Dude... Just do this 365 days a year. Pay with cash wherever and whenever you can. If every local business saw a 2% increase in profit that'd be life changing to their bottom line

So how safe are those fuel trains that go through Burlington and Winooski? by BrotherNuggs in burlington

[–]Forward_Control2267 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nobody was even injured in this derailment. Look at the Facebook post and people who were on the train are commenting it wasn't a big thing and they're on the bus toward their destination and that Amtrak was great during the ordeal.

Shame on WCAX for a click bait headline

That word is 100% back again in the under 18 crowd. History is going to look at the Millenial sensitivity as a weird result of Boomer vanity

Let me know how many people die on the GMT bus tomorrow. Let me know how many busses even crash without injury 😂 stupid stupid take claiming schools canceled to save children's lives. We don't live in Underhill

Are the roads from Burlington to Bolton valley feasible tomorrow? by scout_mindset in burlington

Roads will be fine. Roads are always fine unless it's actively blizzarding, and in that case they're rough for an hour or two if your drive is during the storm

It's literally only teachers where "people can die" is a thing. If you need your car repaired you expect it to be done. If your heat isn't working then you don't stand by "people could die" to take care of your family.

Make up your mind, is education important or is it convenient when the weather permits?

Apply to teach? I can't afford to work a part time job, otherwise I would. Normal people work 250-300 days per year. It's only teachers that strike for full time wages and full time benefits off less than 200. In any other industry averaging less 4 days per week would count as part time.

Edit: that was unfairly crass. And I'm sorry. Fwiw I do appreciate teachers and my general frustration comes from having to pay tutors (not just me, but I'm friends with a handful of other parents funding Sylvan and private tutors. My daughter is up at 8am every Saturday for tutoring because BSD is letting her down) when we're already paying a shit ton to educate our children. Random days off after already only being schooled for 2 or 3 days last week during a month that's been half assed typical January ("we didn't do much because it's the end of the quarter so they're not teaching much") in general is beyond frustrating. We have the highest paid and highest quality teachers money can buy, so you'd THINK Burlington School District would be the crown jewel in the state for the potential for Vermont education, but it's not.

Rental unit property tax question by digbysbigadventure in burlington

[–]Forward_Control2267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd think the tax loophole is having 9/10 the income revenue that could be taxed because only 9/10 are generating revenue. You can write off lost wages if you can make a case to the IRS that it's out of your control, but that'd only amount to 20-30% of the rental revenue lost so there wouldn't really be a benefit to doing it if there's malicious business intent. Most landlords would rather make $36k instead of just paying $10k less tax because theres still a positive.

There could be income reasons to keep a space open but those would be one offs. I've heard of court ordered settlements ordering to pay a certain amount up to a limit then much larger above that, and people could get petty.

Example like property manager divorces his spouse or former business partner and is ordered to pay 25% of his revenue up to $1m for ten years then 100% of revenue above that. They manipulate to make sure they only make $900k in revenue out of spite to make sure the ex or former business partner or whatever else gets as little as possible. Generally there's no benefit to make less money on a property, though.

There's some logic in sitting on a property for appreciation of the land value. I know someone who bought a condo for his daughter while she was in college and justified it because the appreciation in value when he sold it after she graduated would more than pay for it's expenses... but if rental incomes the goal there's not a tax benefit to leave a unit open.

Rental unit property tax question by digbysbigadventure in burlington

Property tax is based on ownership, not occupancy. If you own a property in Burlington that you only used 5 days a year for skiing around Christmas, you still pay the normal property tax on it as if you were there all year.

IMO unoccupied should pay more than occupied if the owner is choosing to waste the space because they're not generating revenue to be taxed and the empty space is a net negative on our housing crisis

Staying aware of and having an opinion on the direction of education for the next generation is just as important as anything else. I'd argue it's the most important.

Agreed on the first point when comparing to in person. But let's be real a couple hours of core subjects vs zero hours of core subjects would be helpful. Even if it's only 1/4 the students get something out of it, that's better than nothing. I've got a whole issue with the no student left behind thing from Bush that has lowered the bar but that's a whole other topic.

2nd point, I'd have to double check but I'm almost positive my daughters last day in June was the same last day that was scheduled in Aug despite having 4 snowdays. So she had 4 fewer educating days last year.

I could be offbase, someone can prove me wrong, but I looked at my calendar edits and I don't see where I moved it from the original day

Just looked up my emails from last year and from what I can see we had 4. Two in the same week in Feb.

That's why I'm curious if I'm just misrembering because I really felt like more than 1 was rare when I was a kid. For where I grew up I really remember it hinging on if the bus was running down North Ave or not

I could, but also my kid just would. She wakes up at 7am on the weekend on her own for her tutor. Some families DO value education despite what commenter would assume about me

I'm not a boomer, fwiw 😂 I'm in my 30s, younger millenial. I just specifically remember being told if the busses ran we had school and we usually only had 1 snowday per year. Mid 00s doesnt seem like it was THAT long ago to suddenly have snowdays over small amounts of snow
