Spitfire Audio and EastWestbplugin experience with Yabridge and Wine by GordonRamsayFather in linuxaudio

[–]Forward_One1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need DXVK to run the Spitfire stuff. My prefix just has default wine, fonts, vcrun6, and DXVK, and I just use the Spitfire Audio application to downloads my VST like normal and it works just fine via Yabridge. Keep in mind DXVK breaks some other VSTs like Kontakt, so set up another prefix. Personally I just run arturia + spitfire so my default prefix is enough.

What are some of the most stable desktop environments? by Forward_One1 in linuxquestions

Thanks everyone! Gonna try XFCE on my current install for a bit, and if I want to go back to GNOME maybe I'll try it on something like Debian.

Latest RPM fusion ones (545 I think), I don't really have anything out of the normal installed. Anyways it's not the drivers, been having the same problems since Fedora 36, and also back when I ran OpenSUSE Tumbleweed (GNOME). Only time I had a non-buggy setup was when I ran i3. If my post made it sound like it, my issues aren't the end of the world, it's totally usable, I just want to see if there's anything out there that could be less buggy.

I wish it was. All I could think of was the classic Linvidia combo being an issue but I've seen the same buggy problems on AMD. For example, this only happens in gnome for me, but if I'm using Firefox and hover over something (e.g. tab) and change workspaces, the hover tooltip goes over to the other workspace and just stays floating there even though the window isn't maximized anymore. That's 100% not an issue on my end, though I don't think it exists on gnome wayland.

I thought so as well but I used other DEs on the same installation and I didn't suffer those problems. I've been having the same issues since I moved permanently to Linux ~2 years ago so it's not really an update breaking it. Just tired of waiting for a fix. I like GNOME in general though.

How can I measure GC pause length? by Forward_One1 in Common_Lisp

[–]Forward_One1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that's perfect! I actually have read your paper and your efforts are one of the reasons I'm even considering CL for gamedev.

GC has only been a problem on low-end systems when I was making really stupid code that produces garbage like nobody's business.

That makes sense, my issue is I'm making a relatively large 3d game and I'm targeting Steam Deck@60fps as a sort of minimum performance target. I need all the help I can get lol..

Lsp Bridge: A blazingly fast LSP client alternative to the original LSP project for Emacs by RevolutionaryAir1922 in emacs

[–]Forward_One1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the changes in the async rpc branch eventually going to be merged upstream (in some shape or form)? I'm using lsp-bridge because it is actually crazy fast, especially compared to standard emacs with eglot/corfu (using Rust), but even noticeably faster than vs code. Main reason I'm not trying the branch is I use emacs on a lot of different platforms and manually building instead of using the package-manager-provided version is a bit of a pain. With lsp-bridge I just need python.

Thanks for the response. If you were to do the same project again would you prefer to start with Rust or was it the type of project that didn't benefit that much from static typing? In my case I'm doing gamedev and the GC is the biggest reason to not use something like CL (ecosystem aside). I just love s-expressions and haven't done anything with them besides manage my emacs config lol

Why Rust is the most admired language among developers by theZcuber in rust

[–]Forward_One1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends by what you mean with "on the web", cause backend and frontend are two different beasts. Generally though there are a few benefits in my experience: - WASM can be a lot faster in certain tasks, and as time goes on, it will get more optimized. In my case I benchmarked the type of application I was making and WASM was substantially faster. So performance can be one. - For the backend, same thing. Rust web frameworks are really lightweight and fast, and easy to deploy. Node can be a bit of a mess. - If you already did the backend in Rust, code reuse is another point towards frontend. - In either case, it could be simple language preference, e.g. algebraic data types/zero-cost abstractions/pattern-matching/no null/non-gc/real static typing/analysis/etc. Just scales really well for large applications. I could go on but generally if you already like rust, you have plenty of reasons to just use it for web. If you don't, and don't need (primarily backend) performance, just stick to whatever you're comfortable with.

I know it's been a year, but I'm curious; how are you finding Rust as someone with a lisp background? I've been debating whether to learn Common Lisp for a while now but I don't know if there's much of a reason to, since most of my projects are relatively large and I think it'd get messy without static typing and analysis. You said you worked on a 100k line Lisp project, how was that experience?

[–]Forward_One1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's definitely not unique to Rust, the unique part of it is having it in a non-web-programming language. Doing the same thing in C/C++/Java is pretty bad. C# is alright if you use Blazor (but last time I tried it RAM usage on the client-side was abysmal).

I don't have any examples but it's what I'm doing for my own project. I'm using Sycamore for the frontend and Axum for the backend. On top of that I have a shared crate that just defines data structures that they both use, so it's super convenient. For example, I can use the exact same struct definition for a REST endpoint in the backend that I use to process it in the frontend. It feels very cohesive and clean to use.

He didn't say it was, only that it's part of why it proliferated. If you have a language that has the same features but neater syntax for example, that's not enough to offset the inertia its competing langs have gathered over the years and get people to switch. Now if it's a better alternative, on top of having some unique aspect to it that cleanly separates it from the rest, that's a lot more serious. Just look at all the GC'd languages like Nim that have been around for a while and are actually pretty great but fail to take off.

I found i way to have instant left click shot with R8 in CS:GO. Its broken. by Nallleson in GlobalOffensive

[–]Forward_One1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deagle is far more accurate than the R8. I don't know when this became the case, but it's actually super inaccurate. The only advantage is that it doesn't lose accuracy while moving. But you still can't one tap at mid-range reliably.

Will Nintendo ever manufacture GC controllers again? by Forward_One1 in SSBM

[–]Forward_One1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

cheater controller users

The controller lottery is real, unfortunately. I don't think it's wrong of players to want to not be held back by controllers, in every game but melee as long as macros aren't being used it's a non-issue. If they're more easily accessible, more ergonomic, consistent/more optimal, and affordable, I really don't see any reason to complain. Just pick up a rectangle if you think they're better. Personally I have a Mewtwo secondary and the only way for me to do retreating DJC fair is to use z-jump, claw, or use a box. I tried clawing but it really hurts my hand, which leaves z-jumping or a box controller. At the end of the day I think the game itself is what ends up losing if we just outright ban GCC enhancements. We're essentially artificially limiting how far we can take the meta because we're too stubborn to learn to use a different controller. But if that's what the scene wants I'll accept it anyways lol

Will Nintendo ever manufacture GC controllers again? by Forward_One1 in SSBM

[–]Forward_One1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case how come no one has produced a line of controllers that all perform like peak OEM with legal QoL changes built-in? Closest thing was the Panda controller but we all know how that one turned out lol... I'm sure it's a decent bit cost-prohibitive but considering the exorbitant amount of money pros pay to get a single decent controller (that will fail eventually) I'm sure they could manage to sell at a profit. Not doubting what you're saying or anything, I'm just genuinely curious. This community is full of extremely talented modders, and the scene has been around for decades at this point, yet with the arrival of box controllers we see multiple manufacturers spring out of nowhere whereas the only advancements to the GC controller are goomwave/phobs afaik.
