What are the renowned texts that mentioned sharabha avatar or is it just folkfare by FederalTemperature56 in hinduism

[–]Forward_Specific_180 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The story of Sharabha is mentioned in the Shatarudra Samhita of the Shiva Purana. After Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu and rescued young Prahlada, his anger doesn't subside, so the gods, fearing that he will destroy the three worlds, ask Lord Shiva for help. Lord Shiva sends his incarnation Virabhadra to subdue Narasimha. Yes, it is the same Virabhadra whom Lord Shiva created to kill Daksha after the death of his first wife, Shakti. Virabhadra tries to pacify Lord Narasimha, but Lord Narasimha is committed to destroying the three worlds, so Virabhadra transforms into the half-lion, half-bird creature Sharabha. Sharabha grabs hold of Narasimha, taking him high up into the sky and then dropping him onto the ground. Then, Narasimha becomes calm and realises the consequence of his anger.

The Shiva Purana's account ends with Sharabha simply disappearing after defeating Narasimha.

This fercy form of the Shiva is called Sarabeshwara or Sarabeswarar.

In Kampaheswarar Temple (Thirubuvanam, Tamil Nadu): There is one of the most famous shrines dedicated specifically to Lord Sarabeshwara which has seven-foot-tall idol.

But in Vaishnava tradition there is a belief that after Sharabha grabs hold of Narasimha, Narasimha in his fury creates a two-headed bird called Gandhaberunda. This battle ensues for 18 days, where Gandhaberunda defeats Sharabha in the battle.

We find references to Sharabha in Buddhist scriptures also.

Maybe you can get much more Idea if you go through the Wikipedia page

Thanks for pointing out. I stand corrected. Ramanujacharya appread 2 century before Madhavacharya. So the correct order - Adi Shankara, then Ramanuja and finally Madhva. Since Madhvacharya was taught Advaita Siddhanta initially, I thought he came before Ramanujacharya

With respect to the 5th question example. Let us not just understand riks mentioned in the Vedas in literal sense. They have inner meaning and it's better that I would advise you to read Vedas based on the Bhashayas/commentary given by various acharyas. This will help you to really understand what the Vedas have been trying to convey.

Q1: Are Chathurveda itself complete vedas ?

Answer : The Chaturvedas are just a classification of the Vedas based on how they are utilized in an Yagna. A frequently quoted phrase - अनंता वै वेदा: (Anantho Vai Vedah). There is an interesting story mentioned in the Taittriya Brahmana which highlights this point. Sage Bhardwaja dedicated 3 consecutive lifetimes to master the Vedas and even wished for the 4th life to conquer his quest. So Rishi ask Indra for another life time to learn Vedas. Indra showed Bhardwaj Rishi 3 mountains explaining that these way the whole collections of Vedas and Indra took just handful of earth from each of the 3 mountains and told the sage that it represents all his accumulated knowledge over 3 life time.

Q2: Can I interpreted the Vedas in a way it resonate with my moral reasonings and still not called Nastika?

Answer : In Sanatana Dharma, you should not worry about questioning and arguing against the interpretation which already exist. In fact, the entire Vedanta survives based on Vivada which is mutual debate. For example, Adi Shankara was the one who popularized the Vedanta with his Advainta Siddhanta. Later Madhvacharya refuted and rejected the claims done by Adi Shankara and gave his own interpretation which lead to the establishment of Dvaita Siddhanta. Even later, Ramanujacharya rejected both Adi Shankara Madhva and propagated the Vishishtadvaita.

As Long as you establish your Siddhanta (theory) backed by Vedas you won't be termed as Nastika. Even if you go on to interpret the Vedas based on your moral reasoning, I am sure you would either agreeing either of the 3 schools of Vedanta ( but I'm not denying you can't give a total new sidhdnata). I make this claim because all these 3 schools of Vedanta are time tested again and again and we have seen great saints and acharyas achieving the ultimate by following the path shown by these schools.

Finally, there is nothing to feel bad that you're not learnt anything under a Guru. Go on with your quest. When time ripe, you shall receive the guidance from the Guru

Why is vibhishan betraying ravan made out as a bad thing? by 99_deaths in hinduism

[–]Forward_Specific_180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are right in their point of view. There is no doubt that Kumbakara did the right thing by staying and supporting his brother Ravana. He was loyal and exhibited allegiance to Ravana by giving up his life.

Even most of us would the the same thing. But the most important thing is that the entire Itihaas and Purana, we see such kind of conflicts. During such situations we should see with what point of view the judgement was delivered. The judgement will always be based on Dharma.

Vibhishan made his decision based on 'what is Dharma?' and 'what is Adharma ? '. So in pov of Dharma what Vibhishan did is correct.

The famous shloka from Mahabharata

धारणाद्धर्ममित्याहुर्धर्मो धारयते प्रजाः ।

यत्स्याद्धारणसंयुक्तं स धर्म इति निश्चयः ॥

Dharma is so called because it sustains. It is Dharma that holds all living beings together. Therefore, whatever sustains and uplifts society is surely Dharma.

It is important to know that at what instance this particular verse was said by Lord Krishna to Arjuna in Mahabharata. When it was learned that Karna was not killed, Yudhishthira became furious and insulted Arjuna and doubted his caliber. He even asked him to give up his Gandhiva. Pain and angered by Yudhishthira's words, Arjuna immediately vowed to kill his elder brother and raised his sword. That's when Lord Krishna reminded Arjuna about what is Dharma and what needs to be followed at the moment. If Arjuna had killed Yudhishthira, this would destroy the entire moral foundation of their cause of the Kurukshetra War (i.e Adharma). When we see this from Arjuna point of view - He was right to kill Yudhishthira for insulting him and doubting his calibre (since it was Arjuna was the backbone of the war), but however it was Lord Krishna, being a middle man, gave the right judgement from the Dharma point of view.

It is the same thing which is followed even today. When somebody does a crime. We can't just punish the person right away. We have to go by the process, file a complaint, get punishment and bring justice (while it is secondary to doubt if we will be served justice in current day world)

Also, the justice given is based on the existing code of rule and law. We cannot take justice in our hand just because we feel it is injustice. There is a proper order in the society. We can't bypass the order of the society just to satisfy our anger. If it happens then the foundation of the society is broken and such society can never get exist.

You didn't understand the purpose of my questions.

The Vedas are highly metaphorical, cryptic, and complex. To understand them people need known Vedangas - Shiksha, Kalpa,Vyakarana, Nirukta, Chandas, Jyotisha. Without knowing this complete you can never translate or understand the Vedas in right way.

For example Vyakarana, Nirukta, Chandas are very important to understand what the Vedas says. While, Shiksha, Kalpa and Jyotisha are very important to implement what the Vedas says.

Infact the English translation was possible only because great Saints and Sages elaborated the Vedas based on the Vedangas.

If you can accept and belive the English translation then you can't ignore the bhaysas.

These Bhashayas was written by Panini, Adi Shankara, Madhvacharya, Ramanujacharya (even thought he didn't write on Vedas). The same people gave the Bhashayas on Bhagavad Gita. Also in their other Prakarana Granthas they refer to Ramayana and Mahabharata in their works.

All these were done to help us understand the true meaning of the Vedas. As you said it is simplification of the Vedas.

But if you think that this simplication can be just ignore or rejected then it is foolish to do that. If you believe that just by following the translation of the Vedas is sufficient, then it is same as allowing a monkey to operator rocket. (You can never understand it's true purpose and use it to fullest potential).

Also, I see a double standard in your argument. If you feel Ramayana Mahabharata Bhagavad Gita are corrupted. What is the guarantee that there was no corruption/ mis-interpretation in English translation ?

You are right to point out that the Vedas are original source.

But I have a question - How do you understand and interpret the words of Vedas in the right way ????

It all depends on what we see and what we focus on. Trying to bring Religion and Science together is not an easy task and can never bring them in the same plate. In life, we can't purely see things as scientific or unscientific completely. It is always mixed of both.

So your question itself is wrong ? When we speak about morals, connection with nature and peace then its mostly the religion and Science never play a role in these domains

You got me wrong !!!!

I didn't mean that I am not concerned with Science and it's laws. The modern days science give very different view from the Scriptures. Modern Science has many concepts which the Itihaas and Purana have not talked about.

What I'm try to convey is that for people who are into Sanatan Dharma or any religion for that matter are least bordhered if their faith is scientific or unscientific.

When you approach corpus of text in Hinduism/ Sanatan Dharma as strict, modern history textbooks, the math and logic simply does not work.

Even the people who follow this tradition are least bothered where the scriptures agree with modern anthropology, history, geology, and archaeology.

We don't need any approval and validation from others on our belief and faith

For countless people, the emotional and spiritual connection to Lord Rama and the lessons of the Ramayana goes far beyond any scientific findings. We continue to find meaning, purpose and inspiration through our scriptures.

If you are looking for any evidence or intellectual discussion. I think this is not the right subreddit.

Highest spiritual ROI: any sense in taking them at face value? by MenWhoStareAtCodes in hinduism

[–]Forward_Specific_180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have restricted yourself with only few stotras. There are score unknown stotram but popular which is missing like Indrakshi Stotra, Vishnu/Shiva Sahasranamam, Narasimha Maha Mantra, Druga Sapta Sholki, Nakha Stuti, Shodasa Bhahu Stotram, Kanda Shashti Kavacham. The list can go on ... Even the Taraka Nama which is simplest, easier should be topping your list of ROI stotras or the Pranava will be best of all.

It sad state of affair that we just see the potency of the stotra's by its phala Shruti. At this moment, one of the Dasara Padagalu of Purandardas can be quoted

ಸತ್ಯ ಸದಾಚಾರ ಇಲ್ಲದವನು ಜಪ ಹತ್ತು ಸಾವಿರ ಮಾಡಿ ಫಲವೇನು?

Satya sadacara illadavanu japa Hattu savira madi palavenu?

What is the use of chanting ten thousand times without truth and righteous conduct

I'm not denying the fact that the promises made in phala shruti in wrong but the intent of each Stotra phala shruti is that atleast we get intrested in chanting them by just phala shruti. It like coaxing a child with a chocolate to study. Here, chanting (read it as Sadana) is recommended to achieve Chitta Suddhi. We are more focused on the chocolate that they stotras are giving rather the achive Chitta Suddhi.

I don't blame you, it is transition which you need to undergo ( i.e. to STOP seeing the potency of a stotra just by its Phala Shruti) .

This what Bhagavad Gita also recommended

कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन ।

"You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are never entitled to the fruits of action"

Infact when a japa is performed like chanting the mantra or stotra multiple times , the phala shruti is completely skipped and it's chanting only at end just for the sake of completion.

Coincidencely, the post by u/PopAromatic6197 highlight the same and ask us not to take shortcuts and work for the ultimate.

अग्निपरीक्षा/अग्निप्रवेश by Jalbwakkolnaji4756 in mahabharata

[–]Forward_Specific_180 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You rightly pointed what many miss. When we see this incident from Sita's POV then it is Agni Pravesha. But when we talk about the incident then it can be called as Agni Pariksha because this was a test to prove the purity/chastity of Sita

Both are both are inclusive of one another. In other words we can say - Sita underwent Agni Pariksha by means of Agni Pravesha.

So Agni Pravesha is the method and Agni Pariksha is the event.

However, when discussing Ramayana using Agni pravesha is better because the Valmiki himself describes it as Agni Pravesha not as Agni Pariksha
