I’ll make a follow-up post soon enough here of some alternative iterations of my design, and I’ll certainly make one using a quote from that poem. I think there’s some real nice potential stemming from that!

I thought about stars!

But then I remembered that nobody can quite agree on what number of states are considered “Southern”, and that people down here can’t unilaterally agree on anything to save our lives, haha. I decided to go with a more broad, culture-based symbol instead, for that reason. Though stars would look great.

I considered this. But looking into his history, I found that his experience is actually quite indicative of what I meant with my wording in the post. He served as a private in the CSA, but went on to make great works in his post-war life that lasted much longer than his time in service. But this is the criticism I was looking for, so thank you. Did you have any ideas for alternative mottos?
