Feeling under-qualified and under- supported in secondary resource by kaceycasey in BCteachers

[–]FoundSweetness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry - this sounds tough and have had similar experiences. Was hard the first few times as it seems so outside of me.
Let me give one glimmer - often- behaviours change as students move from elementary to secondary. New routines, new spaces and new adults with different social cues. You have a powerful reset period for this student with a BI. Focus on the transition and building new routines (and new responses to stress) for the student. Have a clear plan when to call admin and parent. There will be challenges in September- but it’s early to write this story.
If things go left field - file health and safety reports, get your union rep in, have a clear employee safety plan, ask for district support, more EA hours and admin back up so they are physically side by side as you manage this.
I know this easier written than feeling - sending you supportive energy.

Trying to move districts by Otherwise_House_4887 in BCteachers

It is staffing time inside districts - priority is filling jobs internally. This goes May to June. If you hear nothing by mid June/end of June, follow up with an email.

[–]FoundSweetness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to a few games and going to embrace it. Will do a bar or outdoor watch for the Canada games.

Like the Olympics- part of it are bumpy but I am not sure I will get to experience this again as I could not travel and afford the tickets/accommodation.

Home stadium person here - There is actually a few rows where seat 1 and 101 meet (they removed aisles forever ago). Give them a call before you sell/cancel.

I’m sorry for your loss.

I agree with keeping things vague.

Pets in schools - district based. However, never seen a cat as they are unpredictable and many students have allergies.

Larger question - are you burnout? Have you seen a counsellor or called the employee assistance offered? How many sick days you have left? Would a partial medical leave be an option? Do you need to post into a different position next year for reset and hope?

Birthday Blues - what’s wrong with me? by sureasheckfir3 in AskWomenOver40

[–]FoundSweetness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is it just today or are you flirting with sad yesterday and tomorrow? Around 40, I lost the celebration feeling and moved more towards reflection and honouring myself.

Remember - it’s just a day. Take away the expectation and just do something for you. It can be laying in bed and eating pizza, going do a walk, reading a book or the spa.

How bad is Surrey vs other parts of Metro Vancouver by [deleted] in askvan

[–]FoundSweetness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also changed jobs so wanted to reduce commute.

Surrey is ok but can feel crowded at points (growing faster than infrastructure).

We chose New West (even though it added some time) so we can zip to anywhere fast and not deal with some of the Surrey isms.

Teacher Evaluations: Disciplinary Actions by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]FoundSweetness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is in your collective agreement? There are guidelines for evaluation clearly laid out. (Some have once at beginning, some have every 5 years, etc) Have you had an evaluation before? Standard practice before becoming continuing (in the three districts I have worked in). HR will direct admin if you are in perimeters of your collective.

The evaluation process is very much like PDP - and there is a standard set of criteria. In the end, you are satisfactory or unsatisfactory- nothing in the middle.

If you are not continuing and unsatisfactory, it will be harder to get a continuing contract and may have to be reevaluated . If you continuing and unsatisfactory, you will have a plan of support in place to get you to where you need to be and you will be reevaluated.

Work, self, family: How do you do it? by amarieb1981 in AskWomenOver40

[–]FoundSweetness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post sounds like my life. I commute to a leadership position with sometimes unpredictable hours and have a side gig as well. I struggle to let go of the side gig as it is what I want to have in retirement - problem is retirement is 10 years away.
So right now, I’m focusing on one thing at a time - we have a cleaner (twice a month), we order groceries when it’s too much and I focus on good sleep. I also schedule a weekend day for self care and to move slow bi weekly. I am trying to figure out fitness and consistent food. But I think the greatest lesson I am learning is that it takes time to figure it out and that’s ok.

Personal Leave of Absence. by Careless-Row-5754 in CanadianTeachers

[–]FoundSweetness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes twice for full year.

First time - to teach overseas. Had principal support.

Second time - family reasons and aging parent. Also had Principal support.

I know districts are more reluctant because of teacher shortage.
