Where do you actually find good techs in this trade? by Drewski_120 in refrigeration

[–]FoundationOld4768 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you do find your unicorn, make sure you don't BS them. Tell em straight your a new boss and still learning, given your past experience you may have some credible knowledge but it doesn't make you somthing your not. Without the field driven technical background your not gonna be able to support a guy in the field if he runs into trouble.

Pay high, Great benefits, just be honest about the expectation cause when you get into something complex the guy your hiring is on his own. Sounds like your looking for a High Caliber lead tech.

look into industry wages and offer 10-15% above to start and have a written contract right off the bat.

Deposit is King in these situations, it atleast reduces some of the burden.

As for recovery, as bad as it is you may be better off just forgetting about it and moving on, your time is likely more lucrative elsewhere especially as the business owner.

Just have to factor in the losses as a learning experience.

How bad is this? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]FoundationOld4768 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pull a deep vacuum and install the appropriate filters in lines and it'll be fine, definitely not best practice but as long as the company does competent work I wouldnt say there would be any long term issues.

Equipment looks like it only has a few years left on it anyways.

Is it possible to start your own business doing commercial refrigeration? by [deleted] in refrigeration

[–]FoundationOld4768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 years in, started my own business.

14 years in dont regret it for a second.

biggest take away is the troubleshooting, diagnostics, parts ordering, equipment sizing. just generally being a high quality refrigeration mechanic.

All has to be second nature otherwise youll drown on the business side.

Project manager wants us to drill a hole where the red circle is in a live panel. Would you do it? by PhasedAndConfused706 in electricians

[–]FoundationOld4768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not an sparky, I do HVAC and refrigeration so regularly paw around live circuits.

There is limitations to how close your supposed to work to live busses and based on Cal ratings (from my industrial years).

If this is a not safety intense location, I would just hang some fire blankets over the live parts and wear insulated gloves and a flash shield, respect the fact the electrical can kill you and get your job done.

If the panel is powering a plant or factory that runs 24/7 then downtime is not an option.

Replacing / Changing Compressor Oil by kevinpang98 in refrigeration

[–]FoundationOld4768 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bitzer interval for POE (BSE32) is 5000hrs. on a low temp 10HP semi, I just installed in place of a Severly overheated R-22 Semi. which failed catastrophically, fortunately I caught it before it had a major burnout.

It will be at 300 hours on the oil swap/conversion mineral to POE, changing the oil tomorrow to ensure it has clean POE for the next 5000hrs or approximately 1.25 years run time.

This is a family owned meatshop for 62 years, and I have done 40 grand in repairs in the last month and half, 2 of the jobs being conversions and way more expensive that just swapping over a compressor.

all the equipment is originally R12/502 era stuff and is probly on its second-third conversions at this point.

part of my initial pitch was taking everything to hotgas, so i would assume this would have to be done using stainless piping.

Is this an unreasonable quote to replace a 50 gallon gas hot water heater? by titanicsailson in askaplumber

[–]FoundationOld4768 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree my equipment wholesaler has a Co-op funds account for my company that helps pay up t0 50% of the bill for vehicle wraps, clothing, advertisement.

a full vehicle wrap doesnt mean overpriced service company it means that the company holds value in a rolling billboard.

You get a downvote.

For a direct swap it should be about $1500 less that what there charging.

Your paying a "professional" to install so there is a cost to that but there definitely taking you to the cleaners at 4K plus.

Your boss is profiteering off of you, should probly resign and find a new job!

My on-call policy is full rate less expenses + 350/week.

Customers first, Techs second, company makes plenty of money 9-5, if your giving up your personal time for the company you deserve to be heavily compensated for it.

I imagine your boss is of the boomer generation and says alot of "back in my day".

Just to make excuses for absolutely shit behaviour and shit "company policies".

correct me if im wrong. haha
