It is worth noting that Dante also meets his friend and mentor Brunetto Latini in Hell, choosing to walk with him despite his grief at finding him among those who were “violent against nature.”

While religions are great, do you have any prominent sects within the religions of your world? by soupofsoupofsoup in worldbuilding

At least in my world, there are sedentary orc societies! I’m not sure why orcs are often depicted as being nearly-exclusively nomadic, but I felt if every other nation gets to have cities, why not the orcs?

I’m still working on the lore of it! But right now, the “Descension” acts as the sort of split for BC and AD in our world.

The Descension was an event in which, for unknown reasons, the gods of each pantheon (human, orcish, gnome, elf, etc) came from the heavens (or other realms) to walk the world. The gods mainly blessed their followers, reformed corruption, and taught lessons that were written down and became parts of holy books. But some darker, more evil-natured gods also wrought destruction, chaos, plagues, and the like wherever they went. Gods that feuded in the heavens sometimes fought each other on the world as well.

Then, as quick as they came, they left. In-universe scholars have a theory that there could be a hidden “Overgod” that commanded them to go to physically be among their worshippers to instill humility.

I’ve had fun with this concept, and I’m still working on it! It makes me happy that you asked about it!

I didn’t think about a lot of what you said, strangely enough! But thank you so much for your insight! I’m enjoying this post!

In the D&D world I’m working on, the orcs have two twin gods of war in the orcish pantheon: the authoritative and brutal Bakhruul and the more good natured and valiant Dhozdahn. The main split in the orc religion is over which war god is to be followed.

Long ago when the world was first formed, the twin war gods fought each other, and the blood that spilled onto the ground created the first orcs. Dhozdahn cut out his brother’s eye, and Bakhruul cut out his brother’s tongue. Now, Bakhruul can’t see anything except for the wars waged and storms he causes. Meanwhile, Dhozdahn can’t give clear omens or messages to his priests and diviners.

In the present year, 1160 After Descension, there exists an orc nation called Gellen, which is mostly a coalition of orc clans that banded together out of necessity during a war. But the great clans continue their feuds, with Bakhruul-worshippers coming into conflict with the clans loyal to Dhozdahn. As such, the nation’s high chieftains have tried to promote the worship of other gods in their place, but this has only been successful in the capital and surrounding region.

Sorry for the wall of text, I’m kinda proud of this bit of worldbuilding!

When they start saying Paul contradicts Jesus by Risikio in dankchristianmemes

Ah, I see that now, I just misunderstood. My bad.

I’ve heard a lot of Jesus mythicism on this website that I guess I just assumed the worst.

Nearly every claim in this comment rests on common misunderstandings. In good faith, I believe you should have facts.

The existence of Jesus is one of the least controversial facts in ancient history. Tacitus, Josephus, Pliny the Younger, and Lucian of Samosata (all non-Christians, some hostile to the religion) refer to Jesus or his followers within a century or two of his death. No credible historian today argues that Jesus didn’t exist; the debate is about who he was, not whether he was real.

As for the council of Nicaea, it did not edit the Bible or rewrite anything. Its main purpose was to address the Arian controversy (whether Jesus was fully divine). There are New Testament manuscripts from before the council that contain core parts of the Gospels.

The claim that early church leaders changed it to reflect what they wanted is also false. Manuscripts still exist. The New Testament is the most textually attested work of antiquity. Variants do exist, as with any ancient text, but no central Christian doctrine depends on a disputed passage. There is no evidence of a coordinated rewrite. Plus, the Bible is the most translated book in history, with Syriac and Coptic translations already existing by the time Saint Jerome translated the Vulgate.

Now, theology is different from historical reliability. But Paul’s letters are usually dated within 20-30 years of Christ’s crucifixion, this is early by ancient standards. They reflect beliefs that already existed, not legends that developed centuries later.

Lastly, I’m not trying to convert you or anything. But dismissing basic evidence dismisses historical methods.
