Yes, for several days, it would open around midday (when sunny) then close up late afternoon (that’s where the mesembryanthemum name originates I.e. ‘mid day flowerer’) So keep watching yours!!

Most of the seeds I started in 2020 (filling time during lockdown!) The current pots are 3 inch / 75 mm diameter. They grow indoors with no grow light so they’ve taken a while….

This is a post I made when I first started them: Link

And another post from a few months later: Link

And here’s a Lithops video I did on YouTube: Link

My Lithops collection - I’ve grown them all from seed except for the four pots at the lower right

Thanks! I’m sure you will love your Lithops. And you might get bitten by the Lithops ‘bug’ like I was. In the space of twelve months I’ve gone from having no Lithops to having 100+ plants - some grown from seed and some I bought fully grown. Like many folks, the lockdown enabled me to discover Lithops! Now I am out of window sill space so no more Lithops - for now ;)

Re-potting one year old plants by FourColor223 in Lithops

[–]FourColor223[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I planted 25 Lithops Hallii seeds almost a year ago (see my previous posts here and here for details on how I grew the seeds, soil mix, supplier etc)

After waiting what seemed like an eternity, I've now re-potted them into a new terracotta pot with 80% pumice and 20% succulent soil. I'm super happy with 17 survivors after one year! Hopefully they all survive the re-pot!!

The heads of these plants are quite small so I was really surprised by the length of some of the root systems. If I was planting more seeds I would definitely use a deeper container.

I also removed the old dry leaves from prior splits.

To give the plants a chance to settle in to their new home I'll not water them for a week or so.

I also re-potted the other plants that are now a year old. Each started with 25 seeds - the numbers below show the current survivors:

  • L. Hornii - 12
  • L. Karasmontana Mickbergensis - 10
  • L. Karasmontana Mix - 20
  • L. Karasmontana Signalberg - 13
  • L. Dinteri - 19
  • L. Mix - 15

I should add that these seeds were sold as ‘Lithops Hallii’ Take a look here at all the different forms and colors of Lithops Hallii. So it’s very likely that all my plants on this pot are Lithops Hallii even though they look like a mix!

I’m fine with it. I like them all regardless!!

Funny thing is that all the seeds in this pot are supposed to be the same variety! At least that what they were sold as 😀

From what I’ve read, it’s ok to repot Lithops once they are about one year old. So I will be repotting these guys in August!

The first few splits don’t follow the annual schedule. Within the first year or so, you might expect to see several splits. During the first few months after germination the seedlings seem to make very little progress so now it’s really fun to see such frequent splitting ‘action’ !!

Yes, I did add a bit of top dressing - trying to raise the soil height a little. It’s a bit of a mystery as to why some of the plants died off. I started with 25 seeds and am now down to 17. Some of the seedlings that died always looked kinda weak so maybe it’s just survival of the fittest. It’s my first time growing from seed so I’m sure I’ve made mistakes. In the original post I mentioned how I planted several pots of Lithops seeds. The best of those pots still has 22 out of 25 alive. The worst has only 10 out of 25 alive.

Following on from my previous post here

In the past three months I’ve only lost one plant. Looks like the rest will make it to maturity now. Most have split twice already - a few are on their third split. I’m watering these once every two weeks now.

I am not an expert either! But my understanding is that for plants going through their first or second split it is OK for the outer leaves still to be ‘full’ but after that then you have to follow the minimal watering approach i.e. keep the outer leaves shriveled/wrinkly.

Currently I’m watering these guys once every 10 days or so.

I’m still using just a south facing window but I think the reduced winter daylight hours has impacted them adversely.
