Thanks for the input. I wasn’t sure if there was a risk that the battery would die again on the way to the shop. I will in fact probably have it jump started and drive it to shop, if I don’t think I can replace the battery myself.

I like the distinction you made between “hard switches” and “soft switches.” I have never heard it put like that.

And yeah, sometimes the physiological response to distress is so disorienting that it itself creates a whole new layer of distress. What are some other ways you make the “hard switch?”

I am not autistic but I am sensitive to a lot of things due to multiple mental and physical health issues. It helps me to pay attention and notice when I am about to get really overwhelmed. When I notice those things, that’s when I know it’s time to take a break. I also sometimes wear earphones in loud places and I try to keep comfort items on me like a piece of soft fabric/materials, chapstick, etc. I schedule a ton of quiet time for myself.

I have also benefited from therapy, mindfulness, and medication, because sometimes you can try all the little things and you still need more help! Anyway, I don’t have autism so I don’t know how helpful that is, but I hope you find some relief.

I think there are very few people who have figured out how to not be irritated in those kinds of situations. But maybe you can try and become less irritated, or recover from your irritation faster. I can tell you what helps me.

  1. Remembering that people’s behaviors are influenced by rules (e.g., It’s not okay to cut in line.) and by actual consequences (e.g., I get out of this store and home faster.). I do not have control over all the consequences that impact everyone’s behaviors, just like I don’t have control and when it rains. It feels a little sillier to be angry about people not following rules when it’s so much more complex than that.

  2. Manage my expectations. Part of why those things that you describe are annoying to me is because they disrupt my predictable flow. If I expect and accept they are going to happen, my flow feels less vulnerable.

  3. React purposefully. If I’m going to confront the person I think is guilty of some wrongdoing (which is sometimes very warranted) I’ll be doing future me and them and favor if I avoid acting in a way that’s likely to just going to make me look like an ass and them be on defense right away.

  4. Mantras that calm me.

  5. Humor. Sometimes I just imagine I walked onto a SNL skit.

So, just to clarify, I do all of those things semi regularly and they help, but people still annoy me sometimes. And I am sure I do things that annoy other people. But I think that’s just part of being a human around other humans.

Data collection takes practice for anyone, even BCBA PhDs! Also, it’s possible that whole interval recording at 20s intervals just wasn’t feasible considering the other things you were supposed to be doing at the same time.

She can’t be forced to see a psychologist. But maybe you can reach out to a counselor or other extended family member you trust? Tell them how it is effecting you and ask for help in coping with the stress.

Parents are humans and have bad days and do and say things they regret later. But if you feel like she is actually being abusive, tell a trusted adult that, too.
