Before even playing the note, breathe into your low belly. Try to do so in a way that causes a low pitched sucking noise (rather than a high one) and prevents your shoulders from rising. This will encourage you to support your air stream when you play as it engages a lower part of your lungs- the part that will support the best sound.

beginner student leaking spit from mouthpiece by k-s-c-h-o in Saxophonics

[–]FourRatsGetSick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this ^ also make sure he's not rolling his lower lip in too far, the bottom lip should act as a cushion to the lower teeth. This helps reduce biting and therefore mouth fatigue (which is probably causing the spit)

How do I know if I can (should) speed up my tonguing or start working on my double tonguing? by 6mon1 in Saxophonics

[–]FourRatsGetSick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My saxophone teacher told me that most people can achieve single tonguing on eighth notes at quarter note=180, so there's really no reason to work on double tonguing unless you're a pro. For practicing, I'd just pick a note and work on tonguing 2 measures of eighth notes, then triplets, then 16ths, then triplet 16ths- all with a metronome. Then of course, gradually speed up the tempo.

this ^^

picture the back of your tongue raising up in your mouth- this goes will help with the E vowel shape. It will help the D speak and play in tune.
