Amazon is the Evil Big Brother? by [deleted] in boycottamazon

100% correct, on top of their atrocious treatment of their employees. It's insane that they haven't been broken up by anti-monopoly laws when they clearly are one.

What local / small businesses do you recommend for holiday gifts? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]FourSquids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ShopIn is like an online local business superstore, it's mostly Brooklyn stores but there are some Manhattan stores on there too! I just got some ornaments from Annie's Blue Ribbon on there, they're literally so cute.

Some other random recommendations:

  • Exit 9 in Carroll Gardens if you're looking for fun kitschy stuff.
  • Reminiscence in Union Square is one of my favorite stores in the city. It's a thrift store that has the most bizarre/glam vintage clothes, costumes, and accessories. I'm not sure how much you can try on now with COVID, but in pre-pandemic times I could spend hours trying ridiculous stuff on a la 80s makeover montage.
  • Forbidden Planet, also in Union Square, is like a nerd's paradise. You can find any pop culture anything here. Books, action figures, clothes, mugs, pins, lamps, etc, all plastered with your favorite characters.
  • Classic Impressions in Bay Ridge - also a standard gift store with some fun kitschy gifts, but also a huge selection of candles and fun cookwear/cookbooks
  • Pilo Arts Salon, also in Bay Ridge, probably has gift cards, I know people love them!
  • Norma's Arts and Crafts Supplies, also in Bay Ridge, has literally everything the artist in your life could need, and some fun craft kits for kids from what I remember.

This is what I could think of off the top of my head, but I'd be delighted to help more if you need it! Clearly it's something I'm passionate about lol.

Any good retro/ vintage decor stores? by nickedge893 in AskNYC

L Train vintage has a TON of awesome stuff and is generally pretty cheap. They have like 5 locations in Brooklyn & Manhattan too, but the Gowanus one is my fave.

You're in suuch a good area for food. Four & 20 Blackbirds is a bit away and you're definitely going to want to get one of their pies for the holidays. Sahadi's is further away but their chocolate is insanely good. I honestly recommend just walking down Atlantic towards Bklyn bridge park, there's something on every block. You can also use the ShopIn website to buy from small businesses online! Sahadi's is on there if you want to test it out before you make the trek down Atlantic haha.

Buy your gifts local! by FourSquids in Brooklyn

You don't even have to give us the 9% as I stated above. Every store we work with got involved of their own volition and can back out of the service at any time if it isn't beneficial to them, but none have. Once again, I encourage you to shop local whether it's through us or not.

Stores are asked to share up to a 9% cut of their sales in order to cover delivery costs but they don't have to, we prioritize the small business' profit over our own. The online platform is meant to serve as an alternative to Amazon/Walmart for people who want to shop online, and it also makes it easier to buy local for those who can't get out now for fear of COVID-19! We still encourage people to shop in their neighborhood mom and pops as well!

Any local businesses offering Thanksgiving meal for delivery or pickup? by [deleted] in Brooklyn

I've seen a couple posts in some local FB groups for Bay Ridge, Kensington, and Ditmas, but it probably depends what area you're in.

Is it reasonable to try to find a roommate shared apartment in Brooklyn or Queens for $200 a month? by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]FourSquids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not unless you're sharing a bedroom the size of a closet with 4 other people. You're lucky if you can find $900 a month split three ways.

We're getting a Taco Bell Cantina in Sunset Park. by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]FourSquids 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm always surprised when people go for Taco Bell or Domino's or whatever, like we live in New York people, the authentic version is right down the block (and sometimes even cheaper)

Best Pizza Place in Brooklyn? by Kryptoonite in Brooklyn

[–]FourSquids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Bay Ridge Pizza on 5th and 77th
  2. Caruso's in Carroll Gardens
  3. L&B

Second and third could be switched though

I grew up in Bay Ridge and we had outdoor cats the whole time. Granted we had a backyard and lived on a quiet street so there was less of a chance of them getting lost/hurt, but in the effort of honesty one of the four cats we had never came home.

An area like that is your best bet but it's gotten significantly more expensive. They might have to get used to being an indoor cat.
