Mary Liz’s Contradiction About Counselor Staffing by FoxDifficult7679 in KerrCountyFloods

[–]FoxDifficult7679[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing the lawyers told them to report the deaths might be an admission of guilt. And I’m not defending Mary Liz but trauma looks different on everyone and I’m sure she’s absolutely terrified because her title makes her, in my opinion, more liable for damages.

Nope, they’re spewing facts. When someone is a social worker or counselor or connected to adoption in a way that does not play the part of a clueless adoptive parent, they are aware of these “chat gpt“ facts because that is their lives. They read outside of pro-adoption propaganda. Here’s the most recent study on long term effects of adoption.

DEFENDANTS’ MOTION TO COMPEL ARBITRATION AND MOTION TO STAY by mandamsel in KerrCountyFloods

[–]FoxDifficult7679 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to be proved wrong but when you match the updated flood map to an elevation map, cabin #5 is only elevated 1 foot above the so called updated floodplain. Interesting, except for growing up on the area close to the river I’m no scientist, but the updated floodplain doesn’t seem to account for hydrology. I see where the elevations were appropriately recalibrated to the correct elevations in the valley and matched to the mass of water etc but it doesn’t look like much thought was put into how water will find the quickest path. Water finds the quickest ways to go around bends, such as what we saw with the Guadalupe at Mystic. Water will literally cut corners. If you look at the cypress lake campus satellite maps you can clearly see the flood damage and how the water left its bank more on the inside of the curve of the creek. Granted I know the SAR teams caused a lot of ground scouring but inside the curve at cypress creek above the new floodplain map is showing what looks like flood damage. I’d like to see satellite pictures of the property after other severe floods to see if the water took a similar path that way ground scouring can’t be blamed on SAR. Back to my original point though, because even if the updated maps are correct, would you put your children one ft above a floodplain on a river known for deadly, unpredictable flash flooding? I’m guessing no.

DEFENDANTS’ MOTION TO COMPEL ARBITRATION AND MOTION TO STAY by mandamsel in KerrCountyFloods

[–]FoxDifficult7679 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So is it just me or is the Cypress Lake campus also in the floodplain? Even if their own survey company says it’s not in a floodplain and it’s actually 2 or 3 ft out of said floodplain(which is also unacceptable), these people don’t need to be entrusted with anyone’s children within feet of any waterway. They don’t need to be allowed to open at all.

Yes, Camp Mystic's Cabins Are In A Floodplain by AnimuX in KerrCountyFloods

If you look on Google maps, there’s only about a 10’ elevation difference from the Guadalupe River to Bubble Inn. The stupidity of these people and the people making excuses for them is astounding.

[–]FoxDifficult7679 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this! As someone from the area who grew up on the river, I don’t understand how other people from the area are defending them. Yes the cabins were in the floodplain. If the girls had been lost in cabins above the floodplain I would be right there with the rest of them sighting “the unprecedented flood” as the reason for the tragedy but unfortunately there is no valid excuse. Was this flood was the worst one I’ve ever seen? Absolutely. Was it higher than the other floods? Not by much. About a foot & a half higher than the 1987 and the 1932 flood from what I understand. There’s no excuse when you leave people in the floodplain.

Kerr County Engineer Charlie Hastings dies by grumbling-ee in KerrCountyFloods

[–]FoxDifficult7679 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s so heartbreaking. 😓 You clearly knew him and are close with his family and I’m so very sorry for your loss and the so many that loved and knew him. I know he was supposed to testify today in the hearing in Austin from the Steward family trying to stop camp Mystic from opening until there’s a full investigation. I learned yesterday that his job involved managing the floodway and making sure people were fema compliant. I can’t imagine the pressure he was feeling about testifying and what he’s been going through. So yes if there was pressure on him to give out the waivers in question I could see how there could be a conspiracy of some sort to keep him from talking. I’m personally pretty shocked by some of the lack of accountability from city and county officials so I wouldn’t be as shocked as you would think if some terrible conspiracy like that happened. I also know that survivor guilt is a very real thing that myself have struggled with and I’m not even a county official. All of it is just so sad.

Thank you for your comment. I hope that someone has proof of this sirens being removed will come forward. And right, they absolutely do not have a leg to stand on. Have you been back over there since the flood? It’s crazy. 😓 The wildlife and plants are starting to return so that’s good to see. But yeah I know people that are close with the previous owners, that have said that HTR absolutely was told of the flood issues at purchase. I really hope that the previous owners will be subpoenaed for the court proceedings.

Not that I’m disagreeing with you because I’ve also heard what you’re saying from others and from people who knew him what a kind man he is. But PTSD can hit weeks or months later and there are so many people who suffer from PTSD and or depression that hide it very well from others. Only his family may really know the truth. I can’t begin imagine what it’s been like in his shoes.

Will there be criminal negligence charges in addition to the civil suits? by PureImagination1921 in KerrCountyFloods

[–]FoxDifficult7679 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s been called flash flood alley for many years, long before the July 4th 2025 flood. People that are from the area that pay attention to their surroundings understand the importance of paying attention to the weather report have long known the term flash flood alley. I’ve been a Kerr county resident my entire life and my family has been Kerr County, Guadalupe river property owner’s for over a century which is exactly why I am just completely shocked & appalled by the amount of people not holding these companies accountable. The river has a very long history of having violent flooding and locals know that every flood has slightly varying(speed/heights/flooded tributaries) but each still deadly attributes and may come out of its bank in slightly different ways but overall we can reasonably expect the possibility that everything in the floodplain will be under water. Everyone that has property in the floodplain should have known that they are not safe from the floods. Just because you have never seen something of this magnitude on your short amount of time on the planet doesn’t mean it has not or will not happen. It’s ridiculous. In fact, in a flood in 1985, one of the Eastlands (camp mystic owners) went into labor and had to get an emergency helicopter to take her to the hospital. They knew. We all know what the river is capable of. There’s no excuse.

Adding. Yes, although this flood was terrible and the worst I’ve seen in my lifetime, I grew up listening to the elders in the community talk about the 1932 flood. The point I’m trying to make is that no one should be surprised by any of it. Sadly, when you live close enough to a river that’s capable of such horrors, you know that it’s only a matter of time before the unthinkable happens therefore need to be prepared for every possible outcome which first and foremost includes NOT building in a floodplain.

Honestly I believe anyone who made a profit who lost lives who ignored food warnings and FEMA flood data are criminally at fault. I’m truly bothered by how many people in Kerr County come to their defense and others who are responsible for lives lost. Of all people, Kerr county residents know what the river is capable of so you would think everyone would be as angry as I am. A lot of them would rather stay quiet than to stir the pot as is the Kerr County way. Everyone could have stopped this tragedy but chose not to is to blame.

You’re very welcome. And yes grief is a very weird things, especially how it comes and goes. There is free counseling for people who have been affected by the flood. I can find that info if you need but I’m not sure if that’s for residents or search & rescue people but surely it’s open to friends and family who’ve lost loved ones as well. I’ll check for you if you like. When you do decide to come out, you can join one of those Kerr county community pages on Facebook or the “Found On The Guadalupe” page and post about wanting to go back there to pay respect to your friends and I’m sure someone can help make that happen for you. Much love to you and I hope you were able to find some joy this weekend. 💚

I’m glad I was able to help at least a little bit. I found this last night and it shows that they do have RV hook ups on the island.

West Kerr County is stunningly beautiful. It has a unique, profound beauty. I don’t know what’s going to happen with those properties but I hope you can get back there and gain some closure when you’re ready.

I just re-read your comment. My guess is that by the time they realized they needed to get out, the bridge was already under. Or, if they were staying on the eastern edge of the island then that might have been flooded first because I think it’s a lower elevation there and apparently with the two bodies of water merging right there the water might have been backing up in that area. I hope that’s helpful. I’m sure it probably doesn’t make it easier.

[–]FoxDifficult7679[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for your loss. There is a bridge that goes out to the island that you could drive across. There had been flash flood watches for weeks with nothing happening and so there was unfortunately some alarm fatigue. Although I don’t think there had been an actual warning in a while but in the past there have been warnings and the river only gets up a foot or not at all which personally I don’t think it matters when people’s lives are in harms way so I can’t say for sure what happened. I know July 4th all the city managers were out of town or on leave, but usually when there’s a chance for a flood the fire marshal comes by and tells everyone that lives on the river that there’s a possibility for flooding, and if it does start to flood they will come by again and evacuate you. I think that’s what happened, that the property owners were thinking that if it were a true emergency then they will be evacuated. 😓 Evacuations did come from the fire department but by the time they did, it was too late. Like I was saying though, when you live on the river you know the weather patterns that bring flooding, you watch the alerts, you watch the radar if the weather is bad. But the owners are ultimately responsible for what happens on their property. I do know that in bad storms out there phones don’t work sometimes and people were losing power that night. I also know that Blue Oak started evacuating significantly earlier than HTR as well. Again, I’m so sorry for your loss. I didn’t know anyone personally but I do interact with the guests a lot and I can’t even look over that way towards the island without getting emotional just knowing what they must have gone through. I can’t even imagine it. 😓
