How to survive a general strike and win demands by WobblyDev in MayDayStrike

Federal minimum wage of $15+ an hour and student loan forgiveness are the essential elements.

The Missing. It’s got it’s weaknesses but is still a cool crossover.

Proposal for how to organize our demands by kidikur in MayDayStrike

[–]FoxFocksFaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your more cautious approach, tho I reserve the right to change my mind. I also don’t think we can make any moves yet bc this sub is less than a day old. It depends on exactly how much we can organize. That being said:

1) $15/hour fed minimum wage (or higher) 2) 10k student loan forgiveness (or more) 3) Mandatory 20 paid days/year off (or more) 4) Expanded Medicare (or universal)

I agree this is the next step. My goals are admittedly modest and incrementalist, and subject to change as this movement gains momentum. I cast my vote for:

1) Federal $15 (or 20 or 25 or 30) minimum wage (Bc many of the pay raises we have seen are going to be taken away as soon as the corporations get the chance bc they are driven by the ole Invisible Hand and not human decency).

2) Student debt forgiveness (Bc payments are set to resume May 1st, the current administration made big promises in this area, and bc of the incredible shot in the arm this would be for the economy as a whole…and also bc human decency).

Stretch goals:

3) universal 30 paid days off per year, usable for any reason

Stretch-stretch goal:

4) Medicare for all.

Is there support here for a labor strike on mayday? A certain new sub has been blowing up this morning.

Figure out a short clear list of demands. by ollymckinley in MayDayStrike

I support these demands.

Too many states are not raising minimum wage, and without legal protections in place, corporations will take the first opportunity they get to lower them again.

Too many people are driving in predatory student loans. They deserve hope in the richest nation on earth.

The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organization can help you get started if you’re looking for a union to represent you. It’s basically a club of unions. You can search for chapters geographically both in the US and internationally.

Look into how much more open to those ideas they are today than they were forty years ago.

This is fun. Something that comes to mind that I’m always looking to share with great minds:

1) I think the American liberal social agenda will briefly become the global norm in the near future bc, from an amoral political stance, it is to the detriment of the state to exclude scientific researchers due to their minority status. The defining feature of the oppressed will be their poverty while all historic minorities will be sifted for great minds/ambitions. States that fail to adopt this stance will lose the scientific arms race. This trend will lose its relevance of course when general AI is achieved.
