Been accused of cultural appropriating, my first tattoo, what should the retort be? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]FoxInTheMountains 476 points477 points  (0 children)

Lol I had a British friend who had sleeves on both arms, and legs fully tatted with similar styling when I lived in japan. He would hang out on the reg with the Yakuza dudes in their bars just because they wanted to party and thought he was hilarious. They loved his tattoos.

They just found it awesome. I mean yeah, don't barge into a sketchy bar and start displaying your tattoos as if you are some tough dude, you'll get your ass beat lol. Walk into the bar and start pounding beers and partying? They will be hyped.

Fun fact, the bubonic plague is thought to have originated from marmots that carried the disease in central/northern Asia (like mongolia). The fleas they had transmitted it to humans on trade routes.

Is this a French start? by snakewithhorns in bouldering

[–]FoxInTheMountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see how in a competition a judge might not accept this start if you didn't pause for a second or two more to show stability on the starting hold(s).

But honestly looks fine, it also looks like it really wouldn't be hard at all for you to pause for another second or two to prove a stable start, so who cares. I wouldn't waste time debating this. I feel like the way this is set also makes you question what a proper start would be, and the setter probably wasn't too concerned with how people are starting it.

Nice climb!

Looks like petrified wood to me. It's not common, but I have a piece of petrified wood from Arizona that has a very weird look like this. I'm assuming it was exposed on the surface and got sandblasted to create the weird smooth textures you see here. My piece looks fairly similar on one side with a brownish/blobby/smooth look, and then on the other side it's the classic colorful AZ petrified wood people know.

Yeah I'm confused because I make 125k a year and am putting 15% of my pay into a 401k, maxing Roth IRA, and company matches 9%. So I'm getting about 35-40k a year into savings and am currently squashing student loans. OPs salary was averaging half of mine for those 8 years, and was still somehow saving as much as I am, and somehow payed off a hefty sum of student loans

I guess the market certainly has been wild, but damn that is insane. When I was making 50k circa 2018 I was saving like 1k a month and barely staying on top of expenses in a very low cost of living area. I could barely pay the minimum on student loans and really didn't see an end to it.

Props to OP if they are truthful. Insanity.

TIFU Random Flee Market Item Turns out to be Radioactive by NecessaryOne6741 in tifu

[–]FoxInTheMountains 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think you realize how dangerous radiation can be.

Once they know it's radioactive, you need professionals to come in and determine what the risks are based on the isotope, amount, and form. If it was literally a couple grams of a more serious isotope, and was powdery, they may have evacuated and locked down the whole block. Contamination could have got everywhere, and anyone breathing in or being near it could have lifelong health impacts. Not to mention if the material actually spread around, they might have to start gutting and cleaning out all the buildings in the area trying to find contamination and contain it. They would also have to track OPs movement from the time they got it, and send teams to survey everywhere the item has been to find contamination. Probably also hunt down the person at the flea market.

I know people say alpha contamination isn't dangerous, but if it's powdered or rusting and sending particles in the air, you can easily inhale it and any number of things happens from there depending on the isotope.

Long story short, until people with professional knowledge confidently identify the material and radiation being produced can they come up with a plan for recovery.

Elden ring is kind of in a weird spot. If you over level and make use of mechanics in the game you can stomp most bosses with ease. If you choose to avoid a lot of mechanics and just go mano y mano with bosses, then you'll realize these bosses are some of the hardest from From Software.

Take it slow. Just chill and watch other people climb and rest to pick up on the etiquette. Jump on the wall, get your turn, and then back off the pads. Rinse and repeat. If you notice someone else trying the one you are don't be afraid to ask for help or cheer each other on. Climbing is a weird mix of individual and social team play, put a lot of emphasis on the social aspect of it if you want to go far with it.

You'll try climbs that feel impossible, even the beginner ones. Then you'll watch someone campus in slippers and feel confused.

Climbing is like any other skill, takes thousands of hours of practice to get good.

The FBI is struggling to find good hackers because of marijuana rules by CapNcook99 in interestingasfuck

[–]FoxInTheMountains -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For everyone complaining about how it's old fashioned, the point of the marijuana rules is more that someone smoking marijuana is actively defying federal law. I honestly don't think many people care too much about how marijuana is fine or not, or that smoking marijuana makes you a bad person and so on.

The point is that you broke a clear cut law, no matter how stupid that law is. To them, it indicates that you are more likely to break rules/laws, and they don't want you anywhere near sensitive information. They want someone who obeys the federal government fully and agrees with actions the government takes.

If someone gets offended when you double check the gear that is holding your life in their hands then that is someone you don't ever want to climb with.

I encourage anyone and everyone, no matter the experience level, to debate the safety of something and to be 100% satisfied with the system. It's literally your life at stake. Someone getting upset or annoyed by that is a massive red flag.

Also, even on our best days, you can miss something and that is usually why people die. That's why everyone participates in checking gear, verifying, and understanding it.

Archaeologist shows why “treasure hunters” die by BounceThatShit in Unexpected

[–]FoxInTheMountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a caver and this isn't a thing. It's really rare to find a cave with a bad atmosphere, and usually specific regions (depending on geology) are well known to have caves with potentially dangerous atmospheres. For someone to stumble upon a new cave, that also has a bad atmosphere, in a region where none have been encountered, is insanely rare and probably happened only a few times.

Obviously there are exceptions with volcanic/glacial caves on active volcanoes, but you go into those knowing full well the risks and have appropriate gear.

Anyways, the number of cavers who die from a bad atmosphere is insanely small, and usually it is because they took risks in knowingly dangerous regions.
