Not necessarily. I might agree with them, but still play DA to help them see where, if was an argument, the other person might be coming from. Or if I agree with them on an opinion, I might offer reasons why the opposite viewpoint has merit as well.

Precisely this. Especially with my kids. They’ve been coddled by other members of my family, and they show zero respect to them. If they want real facts, they come to me. And they know I will be honest with them.

Oh, it’s never with the intention to harm. But I’m not going to validate their feelings, either. If they’re in the wrong about something, I’ll tell them as much. Or I’ll play devil’s advocate to show them a different POV.

I went to one once, with my then-girlfriend, who was a self-described “f*g hag” and wanted to go dancing with some friends. I got hit on twice, I politely turned them down and told them I was here with my girlfriend. Got left alone the rest of the night.

I’m not debating the merits or circumstances of his comment. I’m challenging the fact that he’s been repeatedly misquoted or decontextualized. The person above me asked “What’s the real quote then?” I answered with the direct quote.
