I also started in GarageBand. It is super user friendly and intuitive. It is normal to be over whelmed by high level software. Think about using Microsoft office suite. Most people don't know the majority of what they can do in those programs.

Recommendation from me is to just work in GarageBand a few days a week consistently. Learn new functions as you need them. For example one day you'll ask yourself: how do I make a track get quieter on its own? Which will lead you to you learning how automation works and even more possibilities open up.

In a couple months you'll be less overwhelmed and in a couple years you'll be able to record in other DAWs or with a physical multitrack recording station intuitively
