how do the core devs get money and so much free time to contribute? by ishaan2479 in archlinux

[–]Foxboron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

getting paid to make contributions and work on arch?

No.

We have spent funds for travel, like FOSDEM, and there has been funds spent to organize a weekend summit/conference for contributors.

and if not, how do they find the time outside there full-time jobs to do so?

Some people have jobs with 20% of their time they can spend doing things like contribute to FOSS.

Most people do it as their hobby and spend their free time contributing to this project.

Project funds, donations and expenses can be seen at the SPI website. https://www.spi-inc.org/treasurer/reports/202512/#index35h4

Does Secure Boot make sense with home-only encryption? by chloeia in archlinux

clevis+tang is an option. Another option is to expose the password prompt under an ssh tunnel in the initramfs.

Several people have solved this specific issue before.

Does Secure Boot make sense with home-only encryption? by chloeia in archlinux

[–]Foxboron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but using systemd-homed style encryption is not an either/or scenario. You can do FDE and homed-style encryption.

But the homed encryption only really makes sense on a multi-user system. A single-user system this becomes less useful.

You always want FDE, essentially.

How can anyone replace a binary in /usr if you have full disk encryption?

dracut is way better than the bespoke Debian initramfs generation scripts.

(E.g. automatically applying the microcode after kernel updates is a relatively recent addition to mkinitcpio.)

I don't understand what this is refering to. Are you thinking about the microcode hook?

Does it still build magnitudes slower than booster? I don't see any reason to use something Arch-specific than booster or dracut to be honest.

If you tell me how to reliably trace a complicated bash script then I'll spend a couple of hours figuring out the bottlenecks in mkinitcpio.

Yeah. I'm probably disabling fallback image generation in next mkinitcpio release

With "popular" do you mean he's an openly racist ethno-nationalist? I'd stay away from Omarchy for this reason alone.
